About Me: I'm a dancer and writer in New York City. A Massachusetts native, Itrained at The Boston Ballet School before moving away from home at age 14 to attend The Rock School of Pennsylvania Ballet. I performed as a student with both schools' affiliated companies, in productions including Balanchine's The Nutcracker, Giselle, Sleeping Beauty, and Midsummer Night's Dream. I finished high school early and graduated from The Rock School in May 2005 when I was only 16. I spent summers at Miami City Ballet and Boston Ballet. Hoping to pursue careers in dance and writing simultaneously, I came to New York City to dance at Ballet Academy East (BAE) and to attend Marymount Manhattan College. While at BAE I worked with some incredible faculty and guest teachers, including Cynthia Gregory, Nikolaj Hubbe, and Christopher D'Amboise. In my 2 years there I danced in Balanchine's Divertimento No. 15 and Raymonda Variations, Sleeping Beauty Act III, Bournonville's Napoli, and many others. I was also a teaching assistant and summer counselor. While continuing to train full time, I worked absurdly hard to accelerate through college, and I graduated magna cum laude in January 2008 with my BA in Communication Arts at age 19. In addition to performing professionally with some small companies, I've interned at Pointe Magazine, Ellen Jacobs Associates (a public relations agency for dance companies), Quick & Simple Magazine, and most recently at The New Yorker Magazine. My passion for dance has led to my passion for journalism/publishing, and my writing has appeared in Dancer Magazine, Pointe Magazine, Dance Spirit, movmnt magazine, ExploreDance.com, various websites, and in my college newspaper, The Monitor. My research on dance journalism will be presented at the Dance Research Forum Ireland in June 2008. I'm currently pursuing a Masters Degree in Magazine Publishing at Pace University while performing in the city, writing freelance, and continuing to train with former ABT dancer Kat Wildish. This semester I'm also choreographing for NYC public high school students and auditioning lots, so my blog may cover any number of various topics related to ballet!     Rebecca Kelly Ballet, a small 20+ year-old company based in SoHo, will present its New York Season at the end of this month at the Gerald Lynch Theater on 58th & 10th avenue, NYC. A choreographer with strong themes and a troupe of diverse, exceptional dancers, Rebecca has a remarkable program planned: one that I have had the honor of understudying for the past month or so.

    As some of you know, I have been pursuing a writing career on top of a professional ballet career, and as few coveted paid positions there are for dancers out there, there are even fewer for those who choose to write about dance. Aside from a critique every now and then of a major company in the New York Times, the world of dance rarely reaches the general public through the media. Perhaps there is just no readership for it. But how can dance evolve onstage and in class without an audience there to support it?

    Hi DancerUniverse readers! This is my first blog post on here, but I've been blogging and writing about dance for a long time now. I won't bore you with details (just see my mini bio above) but basically right now I'm at a point in my life where I'm just on the brink of two careers: dancing and writing. On here, It'll basically be focusing on the ballet aspect, of course - though you should know I have about 10,000 other things going on at any given time! Haha. A few weeks ago I was invited to participate in a choreography workshop with this small(ish) contemporary company here in New York. I auditioned for them back in November and after some communication over a few weeks, the director asked me to understudy a performance they were giving and then to come as a guest to her workshop the following weekend. The first weekend when I was understudying I basically just stood in the back trying to learn choreography by staying out of the way, but in the workshop I actually got to dance. A LOT...
