BEings: Dancer Introduction - Amberlee Colmey
Today let me introduce Amberlee. There are so many great ways to describe her, but I will leave you with the fact that she is very talented and that I love my Amberlee.
Martha Graham's Legacy by Kathy Stemke
Alone on an empty semicircular platform painted white, her straight black hair fell like silken threads of fringe behind an oval face with chiseled cheekbones, deep set dark eyes, and a strong angular jaw. Set in a frozen intensity, her body was poised for imminent action.
A dissonant sound from an unseen source broke the silence. Instantly, her coiled body released its pent up force;not in great gentle sweeps of motion, but in sudden percussive shock waves that came from the center of her core. Hard and precise, with little action in her limbs, the contractions and releases sent vibrations through her body and into the surrounding air. Cutting, intersecting lines, circles, and angles shot out from her small frame in rapid succession. Yet the feet of this dancer were cemented to the empty stage.
Called simply,"Dance," Martha Graham's solo mystified its audience when it was first performed in 1929. This kind of restrictive staging and movement, her signature approach to dance, was in keeping with her desire to direct her audience to the percussive gestures of her torso, which were the center of her vital action.
As a dancer, choreographer, actress, costume designer, and inventor of a unique dance technique, Martha Graham has made one of the most important contributions to the evolution of Modern Dance in America. She struck the dance world like a thunderbolt in the beginning of the 20th century, when she combined satire, social comment, comedy, tragedy, joy and sorrow with an intense passion for expression.
Why are Costume Sizes Always Different? And Why is Picking Sizes Always so Hard?
One of the hardest things to do, once you have chosen costumes-is it-what to do about the sizes?
If you are working with kids of all ages, this could be a daunting task. If you are a studio owner or dance teacher in charge of this assignment, you probably face this year after year. Is it a guessing game every year? If you are new to this responsibility or if you would like some tips on what to do, here goes.
BEings: Dancer Introduction - Missy Wujek
I know I said a dancer a day, so please allow me to apologize as the last few days have been very hectic and I have not been able to post. Today allow me to introduce Missy, a bikram yoga addict/candy eating/math loving member of BEings.
Missy Wujek grew up dancing at The Dance Center in LaSalle, Illinois.
NEFF NOVEL DANCE
Some of you might have read that I am finally starting my own company. People have approached me for years asking me when I was finally going to do it. My reply was always the same. "Are you giving me a million dollars?"
Do I have a million dollars now? No. Why am I starting it? How am I starting it? Well that's easy to answer. I was kind of pushed/tricked into doing it. Most readers will remember my blog about having my choreography stolen. It all started that week. Before I found out my stuff was stolen I had been talking with the kid who plagiarized my stuff. He wanted to start a traveling convention (because ya know there aren't enough of them already). He had talked me and a few other guys into this idea of teaching for his new business. When my work was stolen (Remember that this is a friendly blog so I can't really write what I said to him. Here is the g rated version) I told him he was an idiot for thinking I would get into a business with him. (Again that was the g rated version). My other friend, Brandon, who was also going to be a teacher, (he had the investor who was going to fund the whole project) was desperately trying to get me to kiss and make up. He really wanted this convention to happen and I could have cared less. I told him I would never talk or work with the plagiarizer ever again and to give it up. Brandon kept asking me how we could make it work. The solution? I wanted my own non-profit company and then my outreach program would be a school. I told my friend he could be the director of the school. Well my sarcasm didn't sink it to his head. He made some calls and got people with money interested.

Patrick Swayze Health Update
In a new interview with In Touch Weekly, Patrick Swayze reports making great progress with his cancer treatments. He says, "I'm feeling good and doing everything that I need to do to stay healthy!"
Swayze, who is currently on the Chicago set of his new A&E series "The Beast," will return to California soon to receive another round of treatments. He recently celebrated his 56th birthday this past Monday, and according to party guests, the actor looked great.
One inside source present at the party says, "When Patrick appeared, everyone was wearing black shirts decorated with a picture of his face and the words 'Crazy for Swayze' on the front and 'The Beast' on the back. They sang 'Happy Birthday' and had a yellow birthday cake for him. He was surprised and touched."
Swayze will wrap filming for "The Beast" in November. When not shooting scenes, he enjoys downtime with his wife. He says, "We have been walking our dogs and enjoying some of the restaurants. Also, we stay in the hotel so I can rest for filming."
Take it easy, Patrick! We all look forward to many more years of "Crazy for Swayze."
