Dirty Dancing Into Shape

Working out and getting fit becomes all the craze right after the New Year, You may notice an extra crowd at the gym (that usually begins to trickle back down to the regulars by the end of January).  Recently there has been a buzz around dance as a form of exercise, something that dancers knew all along, and workout tapes feature dance routines that get people in shape without feeling like they are "working out".

The latest dance/exercise DVD has been introduced, the Dirty Dancing Official Dance Workout.  The moves are inspired by the movie and maybe, just maybe, it's in time for everyone to re-learn the dances for the Broadway premiere. Unfortunately, the DVD does not include a personalized lesson from Patrick Swayze on how to do that famous lift, but it does claim to have you moving like Baby and Johnny in no time.

Measuring 101: How and Why-Tips from Satin Stitches

The measuring tape CAN be your friend!

The measuring tape CAN be your friend!

In order to be able to choose the proper sized costumes for your dancers, you need to be able to measure properly. Unfortunately, correct measuring is becoming a lost art.

Why? Because sewing, itself is becoming a lost art, and correct measuring is part of what trained sewers have learned to do.

Where do you learn to measure properly?

I learned some measuring techniques in sewing class, back in junior high. I learned more in 4-H, in a sewing project group, mentored by experienced sewers. In my fashion design classes at college, I learned much more about how to measure, and during my industry design jobs, I learned even more. But for the ordinary citizen, learning measuring techniques can be hit or miss.

How have you learned to measure? Do you feel confident that the measurements that you take, are correct?

Generally, every catalog company has a drawing or a picture that illustrates what and where to measure, for their costumes. It is important to study this information. But if you want additional, helpful information to help you properly measure, to get the best fit on the costumes you order, keep reading.

AN EMPTY STAGE by Kathy Stemke

Coiled torso frozen on an empty stage,
a living sculpture trapped and placed
with no gown of tulle to hide her age
but with weeping knees below her waist.

Framed in light her insides groan
with pent up passion poised for release,
she now waits long and alone
for rhythm to carry her into peace.

But I remember her unencumbered
prance, so light for one who was held down
by unfulfilled dreams remembered,
floating above her tattered gown.
