Copyrighting Choreography

Aside from the monumental challenge of actually creating movement, choreographers face an additional, ongoing challenge with each piece they create. They must protect their work.

All artists--writers, painters, filmmakers--work to protect their creations. But the nature of choreography makes it a little more difficult to capture and copyright.

As a dancer, you may branch into the field of choreography someday. In this post, we talk about the basics of copyrighting choreography.

Lyrical Reigns Supreme

Download as MP3

The competition season is in full swing. I have worked four weekends in a row and have seen many great tap, ballet, and jazz numbers, but found that lyrical still remains the largest section in the program. What piqued my interest this past weekend was a very good school in New Jersey that used much more subversive music. "One", a solo, was danced to the hidden track on the Damien Rice album "O" that slipped through the cracks where "The Blower's Daughter" and "Cold Water" did not.

I'm On Dance-a-Day.com

I'm back in Vancouver after a wonderful four months spent living and dancing and making work in Washington DC. I've met many amazing and beautiful people while I've been here, and I'll be holding all of the memories really close to my heart while I'm home.

Reality check

Every dancer dreams of becoming a star. We all want to make a name for ourselves. What dancer doesn't want to become immortalized? It sounds selfish and egotistical, but it's the plain truth. We all want to be recognized for our talent. Where do we go now to be that star? Some of us do Broadway, tours, backup dancing, films, videos and now we have REALITY SHOWS.

New Choreo Ideas

As I was lying in bed last night I came up with an outline for a new work. This project has been at the back of my mind for months, years - but until now I have not had enough distance.  Have not felt strong enough to tackle it.

I want to make a piece that is mostly auto-biographical. It will be a duet between myself and a male dancer. The concept of the work will revolve around my dysfunctional relationship with my ex-husband.
