Brazil's BALE` DE RUA
With a pulsating mix of African dance, hip-hop, samba and capoeira, Brazil`s Bale` de Rua sets the tone for a HOT, HOT, HOT performance.
However, it is not so hot, hot, hot.
Choreographed by Marco Antonio Garcia, a self taught dancer, in collaboration with the French
director Paul Desveaux, Bale` de Rua (Street Ballet) traces the country`s history from its African roots to contemporary Brazil. This journey provides soulful entertainment, full of spirit, meaningful tributes and JOY. That being said, the self taught aspect cannot be ignored. Technique is absolutely absent! Titled as a street ballet, the presence of street is at the fore but there is no sight of ballet.
THE NEXT STEP
Where can you see a group of athletic, strong, flexible, suited up guys sweating it out as they fuse hip hop, tap, live rhymes and smooth vocals?
Well clear your calendars and book in to see THE NEXT STEP when they come to your town.
In tailored suits n` sneaks they crank out authentic rap and cool lyrics, breaking and acro, street jazz and sweet tunes. They are the Robin Thicke of street dance!
The brainchild of Jason Lewis, this concept began in 2003 in his parents` garage. As time went on, Jason hooked up with music producer, Mike Darcy, rapper Adam Katz and lyricist, vocalist, Carlos Velasquez. Instilling leading musicians and younger brother tap sensation, Kris Lewis to the pack, The Next Step self titled original album, live shows and music videos were born.
I witnessed The Next Step`s slick merger of live music and dance directed by international Tap Dogs legend, Dein Perry at Luna Park. They lit fires with their dynamo energy and attack. The live show is oh so creatively designed with scaffold rostrums that move and spin to build a unique stage set for each track. The tempo ebbed and flowed from upbeat hip hop tracks to sexy ballads as each genre was profiled. All the while, the crowd were chanting and screaming!
Their stylized videos are flashy and earnestly lure the viewer in. Their live biography includes performing with Sir Elton John and being showcased on MTV. TNS even have a feature film in the works. You`ve got to applaud the virtuoso performer entrepreneurialism of Mr. Lewis and his industrious posse.
Humbly receiving standing ovations and embarking on international bookings, The Next Step are definitely worth watching out for. They`re coming at ya, hard and strong! Check them out at www.thenextsteponline.com and be sure to view their vids.
Bring on more wonderful talent in 2010,
Martine

STREET STYLEZ
Greetings from NYC !
A hub for DANCE produced for theatre, television and film, New York is also a major hub for STREET DANCE. Head to Central Park, Harlem, Times Square or Union Square on any given day or night and you are bound to catch some amazing street dance in motion. Many times you wil catch breakers, crews, dancers on blades, skates and all sorts. These peeps are out there rockin their stuff and experimenting with new skills, tricks and hoping to pull some cash at the same time.
On my recent travels I have witnessed some fantastic cultural dance in the streets of Europe. Here's what I saw:
