Welcome Home Sascha Radetsky
Remember him? Of course you do! After all, he was Charlie Sims from "Center Stage," the sweet and sweaty ballet heartthrob who won the hearts of thousands of young dancers with the line, ""Whatever you feel... just dance it." I can remember many sleep over parties spent swooning over him with my dance friends... Ok, well, maybe I shouldn't have just admitted that!
Anyways, here's the good news: After a brief hiatus from ABT to dance with Dutch National Ballet, Sascha Radetsky is back!
Check out the official press release from ABT for more info after the jump:
The Plight of the American Male Dancer
Mikhail Baryshnikov, who is often credited for changing the perception of the professional male dancer
The March 17 issue of Newsweek features a beautifully written article by ABT soloist, Sascha Radetsky, on his life and experiences as a male ballet dancer.
This article got me thinking about my own history as a ballet dancer, specifically my relationship to and perception of the male dancer.
Because female dancers must deal with enormous pressure to stay thin in addition to enduring the agony of pointe work, I initially thought male dancers had it so much easier. All they had to do was show up, do a few shoulder-sits, and that was it, right?
Well, the more I interacted and worked with male dancers, the more I realized that they too had their issues, hurdles, and obstacles to overcome. One being learning how to cope with a sort of reverse sexism, being a boy in an all-girls club. They had to learn how to overcome the negative stigma of wearing tights and make-up, and how to gain respect from a society that values machismo over artistry. Now, I'm finally beginning to fully understand the plight of the American male dancer.
