DWTS - Season 10: Week 3 Costume Critique
Last night I was worried to see who was going home. Last week, everyone was pretty shocked to see who was in the bottom two.
I was worried because?
I did not vote, Again. Shame on me! Luckily enough of us, did, so one of the lowest scoring couples DID go home.
But MORE importantly-who won the best costume award last night?
For the guys-Damian won, for his all-black Paso Doble outfit. Nice. Hot. Sexy. Second place goes to Evan with his black on black rhinestones-on-the-lapels, beautifully tailored tuxedo. Classy. Glitzy. Nice.
For the girls? For me, Cheryl won, with her RED HOT Paso Doble dress. It had an elegant silhouette, it was very flattering and I LOVED the bows on her shoulders. Second place, for me, went to Nicole, with her Nautical pant costume. Her retro look with the Palazzo pants with button-front detail, and of course, the rhinestone encrusted sailor collar nicely accented her and Dereks Quick Step routine.
And then my special Weirdness awards for this week?
Erins beautiful dress had a section on the bodice cut right across the bustline. That is a definite NO-NO! The black accent fabric should have cut right UNDER the bust. It looked like it was unnaturally riding high-I wanted to go yank it down, every time I looked at her. Otherwise, the black mesh over the white gored dress was a beautiful, yet unusual look. The neckline detailing was really nice-along with the deep V back, EXCEPT for the visual problem mentioned.
Second place for weirdness? Kates dress. The rigid geometric top, I liked, but not with the soft, swirling printed skirt. Or maybe it was just that Kates dancing was so rigid and unnatural? The very current, high fashion detailing, with the 3-D details was visually appealing, but just not with the rest of the dress.
A reluctant third place for weirdness, was the twenties fringed dress that Anna wore. Very long fringe, on a 1920s influenced dress. Generally 1920s hem lengths were short, not ankle length, but no real problem with that-dance costumes are not expected to be historically correct.
The dark nude mesh was the background for applique details as decoration. The weird part was that this supposedly skin colored fabric was part of the torso section that created a zig-zag dropped waistline, where the fringe was attached. If our brain tells us that this is nude or skin, then why and how is the fringe attached? My poor little brain could not compute this.
And then, a slight wardrobe malfunction! When their performance was complete, and we were waiting for the comments, a dark something seemed to be dislodged and was starting to float around in her dress. Oops! Bust pads and bra parts should be a match to the skin color, the dress color, or have no chance of coming unattached.
Now for my Boob-Watch report. Brooke must have been reading my blog. She wore a flattering and TASTEFUL gown for both shows, again this week. After that really unflattering let-them-all-hang-out dress the first show, the girls were tucked in, and mostly out of sight, since that first showing. Now we can concentrate on her beautiful face and figure, not her cleavage.
After two weeks of Pamelas bustline seemingly under control, they seem to have blossomed this week, in her virginal white cotton lace Wild West saloon girl getup. Did they look bigger, to you?
And while I LOVED Nicoles nautical look, I am NOT a fan of the forced cleavage. Too much wonderbra effect. It would have been better with not so much. Not a fan of the cantaloupe-stuck on the chest, look.
Other highlights-
Ashlys printed gown was beautiful, and so very tasteful, keeping with my observation that the costume designers were keeping a tasteful, not-too-youthful style of costume, to accompany Buzz. Ruching, asymmetry, muted purples and blues in the print, tastefully glitzy.
Chelsie as Cleopatra, was simple yet very visual. The Egyptian jeweled collar, the jeweled Ankh as a golden body tattoo, low-slung belt and gold cuff bracelets all were evocative of the Queen of the Nile, all perfect accessories and trim for me.
Pamelas dress was beautiful, in a 1800s, western-themed sort of way. I LOVED the silhouette. The skirt had very nice flow. Sexy, flattering and danceable. The decoration of the cotton ruffled, eyelet fabricated bodice was a nice combination of traditional western peasant design and glitz.
Edyta was wearing an Edyta style, low cut skirt and skimpy, yet reasonably tasteful top. The aqua chiffon skirt was nicely created with one color layered under another color, creating more visual interest than if it was all done in one color. My only real gripe is that Edyta ALWAYS uses so much nude elastic on the backs and shoulders of most of her costumes. And you know I dislike the visual of a bra-top floating on a body without visually real straps, and a back.
The accessory of the week is? Drum roll please! Large flowers in the hair. Did you count how many of the dancers were wearing silk flowers in their hair? I did, but I will not tell!
Ho-hum-lights-
Niecys pale yellow waltz dress was very boring. It was attractive enough, and reasonably flattering, but really, nothing special. Ho-hum.
Chad wore a more interesting Paso Doble costume than Tonys garish Matador costume last week. But, it was a little over the top, and not in a good way. I do not like men is silly looking costumes, I like them in sexy, MANLY costumes, like what Damian wore this week.
Derek matched, or rather coordinated with Nicole, without much style and no glitz.
Tony, trying to coordinate with Kate, had a so-so, ho-hum red trimmed black vest, with his black shirt and trousers.
And most of the guys were pretty boring, although Buzz looked very dapper in his elegant Military dress uniform. He was voted off tonight, but at least he looked really good!
And the moral of my story? Hey, you cannot always dance better than others, but you can look really good, trying!
Oh, I almost forgot. Wow! I LOVED the oufit that Lacey wore, when dancing to Rebas second song. It was a rhinestone encrusted bustier and panty, with an asymmetrical, unstructured drape of a dress. Wow! Fabulous!
