To Boston and Back... a day in the life of a mini-tour

In the past couple of weeks kerPlunk dance has been busy with the commissioned work in Maryland as well as getting ready for the Charles River Dance Festival in Watertown, MA this past weekend.  So I apologize for my absence...but the chaotic whirlwind of the past two weeks was well worth the effort and extra grey hairs!

Day 1 - This past Friday, five of us from the company packed our selves in a car and headed off to Watertown, MA for the weekend.  Not really taking into consideration that by the time we hit 95 outside of NYC going into Connecticut we would hit major rush hour traffic...we came to a standstill around 3 and stayed for a good 2 hours.  Lesson 1:  always leave earlier!  One Wendy's stop and several hours of driving lead us to the doorsteps of the Theater at 8:30pm (30 minutes before our tech time).   Lesson 1.5:  Also don't forget to factor in tolls in your traveling expenses...doh!

Here comes important Lesson 2: Always bring an extra copy of your music on cd or carry your own ipod hookups (I suggest both).  Upon arrival our cd was temporarily stuck in the cars' player and we had to tech without music...not a big issue since we were able to dislodge the cd the following morning and tech before our first show.  Lesson 2.5:  When things don't go according to plan, keep a sense of humor....everything has a solution, you might just have to get creative!

Day 2 - With performances at 3pm and 8pm, we pretty much had our day mapped out.  Tech aside...the girls and I had some downtime to explore the theater.  The venue is beautiful: Arsenal Center for the Arts Charles Mosesian Theater.  Stadium seating, a thrust stage....I must say, one of the benefits of performing outside of NYC would definitely be the amazing venues in which you can show your work.

Both shows were successful, minus some costume malfunctions that were easily fixed.  We met some really talented artists and loved having the opportunity to watch some of the shows.  I am excited to see what projects these new connections may bring in the future.  But only time will tell.  Lesson 3: Keeping yourself open and approachable is so important in the world of networking.  Lesson 3.5: always have your business card!

Day 3 - Before leaving the area we were able to take advantage of the sites of the city.  Trolly tours, site seeing, clam chowder, and a chance to leisurely walk through boston were well deserved!  It is a beautiful city and we cannot wait to return.   The trip home was easier than going, but we still had to create our own directions due to some traffic issues.  Lesson 4:  Ipod GPS is a lifesaver!

Now that we are back we will be mainly focusing on our full length show for Jacob's Pillow in August with the creation of new work as well as getting ready for our summer intensive in MD.  If you are interested in our intensive just go to www.kerplunkdance.com for more information!  Also, get ready for some outdoor yoga classes hosted by the company this summer as well as a showing in July of the work we are taking to the Pillow.  I'll keep you posted on all things kerPlunk as more information becomes available!

PS. Thanks to Betty (Michelles's Grandmother) for housing the company! We greatly appreciate it!
