Carmen .... direct news from Rome !!!

CIAO from Roma !!!!!

I am currenlty in Rome and last night saw an exquisite performance of CARMEN performed by the major theatre company here, TEATRO DELL'OPERA DI ROMA.
Following a perfect summer day wandering around the ruins and historic sites of Rome, I headed to TERME DI CARACALLA to view an intense opera of Carmen. Here you can view some video footage of it.... www.operaroma.it/header/audio_video/carmen_2009

It was a fabulous evening and unbelievable atmosphere as the entire show is performed out in the ruins of Terme Di Caracalla, an outdoor ampitheatre. We all sat uder the moon, (which was full !) and the stars and drank in the warm evening and world class entertainment.

A full cast of approximately 75 adults and 30 children hit the stage. The performace was in 4 acts and it began at 9pm, not finishing until 12.45 am !!!! They really put on a show !!!

A story of love, passion and dance, Carmen was a true seductress. The staging was so incredible and the entore stage set was completely changed out for every act. As it is an open air performance, the audience views the stage set change over which was also very interesting and took about 20 stage hands.

The orchestra were top notch and the conductor was completley into it, performing himself from woe to go with every bit of intensity as the leads gev on stage. You could view the orchestra as the pit had viewing windows. It was lovely to watch the strings section move in harmony and in sync. Just like choreography of their own.

The dancers were lovely and some moments on stage were so energetic and built up the drama with the entire esemble clapping out the Spanish beats as the dancers moved wildly and with passion.

The vocals of the lead artists were simply breath taking. Most of all, I was taken a back with the incredible attention to detail throughout every element of the performance. Every little eye was dotted !!!
