Highlighted Dance Theater Piece:

Lola Lola Dance Theatre (formerly Odonata Dance Project) and the Institute for the Study of Performance and Spirituality (ISPS) are pleased to present the world premiere of Ectospasms, a multi-media dance theatre piece.

Ectospasms embodies the human desire to reunite with the dead through a series of episodes in which dance, sound, and video imagery intersect.

More after the jump.

In Ectospams, spirits will materialize within a "spirit cabinet" and affect events on the physical realm of existence. Relationships halted by death will be seemingly re-established. Tables and objects will levitate, spirits will materialize in various stages of completeness, mediums will enter trance, and human beings will perform unexpected motions driven by a wide range of motivations, such as easing loneliness, a desire for reconciliation, and the lust for secret knowledge. Women within spiritualism found the voices of spirits lent them the authority to discuss issues previously confined to the guarded realm of men. Dr. Lingan's research into the performance traditions of Spiritualism shapes his performance-text, providing a framework for Bonenfant's choreography, which integrates music, text, projection and movement with a focus on contemporary partnering.

Lola Lola's Creative Director Jessica Bonenfant teams up with long time collaborator Dr. Edmund B. Lingan, Director of the ISPS, to bring the audience on a journey into the world of late nineteenth and early twentieth century spiritualism, an occult movement that asserts the possibility of communing with spirits of the deceased.
