Dancing Inmates Honor Michael Jackson with "Dangerous"

You may recall back in December 2007 when I blogged about a crazy new Youtube phenomenon - the dancing inmates from Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center (CPDRC) in the Philippines. Well, after Time Magazine named their recreation of "Thriller" the #5 viral video of 2007, security officer Byron Garcia decided to keep the dance and fitness program going. Over the past two years, the 1,500 pirouetting prisoners have starred in numerous dance videos ranging in styles from Bollywood to Hip Hop.

Their most recent endeavor is a recreation of Michael Jackson's iconic "Dangerous" performance from the 1995 MTV Video Music Awards. Check it out below, and note their updated wardrobe complete with Converse sneakers and white gloves!

Say what you want about the legitimacy and fairness of CPDRC's dance program, but there's no denying this is pretty impressive!

What do you think?

Amazing!

Lindsay, I haven't watched this video yet, but this story is amazing! It demonstrates the power of dance and how it can be used in ways that are rehabilitative, cathartic, celebratory and more. Thanks for posting!!!

loves it

Not sure if the main guy quite has all Michael's moves - but his moonwalk aint bad. Its amazing how into it they get - and who is it thats cheering? Is that just from the live recording or does this prison now draw a crowd?

Cheering

I'm pretty sure they draw a pretty sizable crowd now, which is kinda crazy. In some of the other videos on their Youtube channel you can see spectators cheering them on from the sides. These guys are basically turning into world wide celebrities. I'm sure the prison has been drawing a major profit from it, which raises some questions about the fairness and morality of this program. In the end I definitely think the pros outweigh the cons, though.
