So You Think You Can Dance is all around us !

The television show has created such positive awareness about DANCE for our industry. It is so popular with viewers and promotes a weekly discussion point for millions of dancers and non-dancers alike across the world season upon season.

Earlier this year while in Australia I had the pleasure of attending a taping of SYTYCD in Sydney. This past weekend I attended their version of the stage show tour which follows the annual season finale. The top 10 Australian dancers performed various memorable pieces from the show.

The best routine of the night was a hot 60's group number which was choreographed by Kelley Abbey. Costuming throughout the show was truly sensational!  Particularly the space costumes,  (pictured). A beautiful contemporary group piece was performed as a tribute to Black Saturday, the tragic Australian bushfires that swept through Victoria earlier this year and took over 200 lives.
Interestingly enough they did a version of the 'The Negotiation', Mandy Moore's table dance from the US show...  hmmm ?

Tabitha and Napoleon's choreography featured throughout this year's season. Their hip hop duet chore to "Dead and Gone" was voted the best piece of the season by the Australian judges Matt Lee , Jason Coleman and Nigel Lythgoe's ex wife, Bonnie Lythgoe .

The 2009 winner, Brisbane ballerina Talia Fowler took out the $200,000 prize money and is set to perform on the US finale of So You Think You Can Dance. Watch out for her then.

One word of advice for the producers  ..... PLEASE have the dancers leave the microphones alone and just DANCE. The scripting of their dialogue throughout the tour stage show was so poor and the presentation was completely cheesy. Next time spend the extra $ and get a host  ..... oh, and a stage set !
