This morning, a New York Times article disclosed the wishes of famed choreographer Merce Cunningham for his company when he passes away. When the mastermind behind the innovation dies, he has announced that the company will set off on a two-year tour and then shut their doors (as a company) for good.

Although this is upsetting news for his dancers and audience members alike, the goal is to maintain the integrity of his choreography and company after he is no longer able to run it.

The New York Times article reports the details of the announcement the Cunningham Dance Foundation made on Tuesday. The Merce Cunningham Trust will take over the rights to his choreography, allowing other companies to perform his works with authenticity (Like the Balanchine and Jerome Robbins Trust has done).

The future of his current dancers has also been taken into consideration and will be compensated and aided in their efforts to find jobs.

A respected choreographer, Cunningham's works are among the most celebrated both here in America and internationally. Made evident during his performances at BAM in April called "Merce Cunningham at 90," his inspiration and creativity continue to flow.
