Snowball the Dancing... Parrot?

I just read a really interesting article on NPR.org about recent scientific inquiry regarding animals and dancing. It all centers around this parrot, Snowball, who became famous for dancing to Backstreet Boys a couple of years ago... In fact, I believe we covered this when I worked at Inside Edition.

So when this video began circulating the Internet, a neurobiologist named Aniruddh Patel decided it warranted further investigation. He wanted to see if Snowball actually understood the beat of the music, so he turned on a slower song. Sure enough, Snowball's movements changed, and he began to rock back and forth like a pendulum rather than kick his legs up like a Rockette.

Adena Schachner, a graduate student in the psychology department of Harvard University, conducted a similar study. She and her colleagues looked at 5,000 Youtube videos of animals supposedly dancing, and analyzed their movements.

According to NPR, they found that there were only 33 videos in which animals seemed to actually understand musical beats. These videos contained 14 different species of parrots and one elephant species.

But still... 33 videos of animals legitimately dancing is a lot and pretty cool! I can see it now... a Broadway musical with a chorus of dancing parrots and an elephant!

Cockatoodle Doo!

So much hubbub is for the birds.  The BIRDS I tell you!  My dog Mr Sniffles can keep time and sing a few bars to boot!  I often hire him out for large ethnic weddings and charity dinners where people find his act a scream!

I think we should have a whole section on this website for dancing dogs and if you need someone to run it then let that someone be me!    I am a dog lover in every sense of the way.

One Luv,

S
