GRAND MARSHALS
This year Dance Parade honors three dance icons for their lasting contributions to the field of dance:
Luis Salgado (Choreographer) is the Latin Assistant Choreographer of the Tony Award Broadway Musical, In The Heights. Luis is the founder/director of R.Evolucion Latina - DARE TO GO BEYOND!, a collective of artists and activists committed to empowering the artistic community in order to inspire growth within the Latino Community.
Morocco (Carolina Varga Dinicu) is considered the leading performer & authority in her field. One of the first inducted into the AAMED Mideastern Dance Hall of Fame. In 2005 MECDA voted her their Humanitarian Award for her body of work over a lifetime in furthering and enriching Near and Mid-Eastern music and dance & in 2006 the Isis Foundation gave her a Lifetime Achievement Award in Ethnic Dance from the Near and Middle East. Morocco created the Casbah Dance Experience. She's spent over 48 years trying to find, recover, preserve and present them before they disappear, due to modernization and/or fundamentalism
Don Campbell "Campbellock" (Dance Innovator) The creator and originator of Locking or Campbellocking a dance art form with the improvisational steps called the locks, created in the nightclubs of Los Angeles in the early 1970s. This dance and subculture quickly caught on and was soon the rage of Soul Train. Locking survived the 70s and has become one of the most influential styles in street dance history.
VOLUNTEER!
Now's your chance to become involved
This year there are three volunteer shifts: 10 a.m.-2 p.m.; 2-6 p.m.; and 4-8 p.m. (but of course you can help all day!), covering both the Parade and DanceFest in Tompkins Square Park. Activities include production assistance, press, photography, market surveys, videography, and break down. Last year friends, exchange students, community groups, even moms and babies in strollers volunteered together - why don't you invite a few of your friends to come with you to celebrate this true NYC experience!
Email Shireen (shireen@danceparade.org) which shift you'd like to join. This is a terrific opportunity to get involved in a landmark New York City event, while contributing to a meaninful community-based charity.
WEATHER
Saturday is Parade weather! Forecast: Scattered clouds, High 75f and low 58f. Winds SE at 9mph. Fun Index: 100%. Think Sun!
