BEings: Sharing is Caring…or something like that.
It is always funny to me when something I was told when I was little turns out to be so incredibly true, but often times, it seems, that many people have lost the art of sharing. Oddly enough, I, being an only child, had a terrible time with what seems to be becoming a lost art in the dance world (aside from in a dance class, different story) have found it easier as I get older to share.
When we talk about sharing though, what are we actually speaking of. Are we sharing ideas, theatres, knowledge, product, music, vision, dancers: what aspects are we supposed to share, and what parts of our dance lives are solely there for us; fine line? I think yes!
Lots more after the jump!
I see where the problem enfolds in the how much is ok to share, and at what point is it enough. You do not necessarily want to blurt out all of your artistic visions for the world to see and/or hear about until you are ready to present them as in their final stage. In this world of YouTube, I am thrilled to be able to post works that have been presented. For a while, I had been posting rehearsal footage; sadly, this will no longer be the case. My intention was not to share my choreography in the literal sense, it was up there for people to watch, not borrow. Bring your artistry to YOUR work. Be influenced, be inspired, be everything you possibly can be and more, but make sure whatever you are being, is yours at the end of the day.
Sharing of other items in the dance world I think is great!
Share a theatre! BEings is putting on a show, and we plan on sharing. Side note; if you are up for it, contact me!
Share your knowledge! I was fortunate enough to be able to participate on the adjudication committee for the DUMBO Dance Festival that is presented by White Wave Dance in Brooklyn. The ability to sit there and listen to these established dance professionals watch and analyze and give their opinions as to why they like this and not that is an experience you cannot easily get. This type of sharing is incredibly valuable to someone like me. Thank you to Young Soon Kim for the opportunity, and a special thanks to Pascal Rekoert of Flexicurve for a wonderful life chat afterwards. (shout out for his show HATCHed Sequel Series next Saturday night, 8pm, at The Works Studios, it is going to be an incredible evening!)
Share product! Revlon so graciously sent me eyelashes (70 sets of them to be exact!), and I shared them, because I could; because the person I chose to share them with shares with me and it is appreciated. You can see some lovely photos of my BEings.dancers as well as Tracie Stanfields Synthesis Dance Project rocking their lashes in this posting. The ability to do small things like that for each other is not only a nice gesture, it is part of what keeps this o so small world of dance small and ever getting smaller, working.
I do not want to go on a super long tangent about how important I think it is to share, I am sure my point has been made already, but I feel very strongly that there is a need to share for growth. And while yes, I have seen some times already where it comes around and kicks me in the backside, I still believe in its importance. As an artist you are already sharing who you are so why not take it those few steps further?!
As always please feel free to share (still on the theme you can see) with me at emilybufferd@danceruniverse.com
