DWTS-Season 8:Week 7-Lawrence Covers Up Edyta!

Costumes

Costumes "Designed" by the Stars This Week!

I was especially excited to see this weeks show, as part of the fun, was to see what the Stars designed-with Randall, for their dance partners and themselves. Last week we got to see Randall with funny bits alluding to what was to come for the costumes. He seemed to be shaking his head a lot!

I was glad I was paying attention to these quick bits, as there was no more to be seen this week, as I had hoped. But host Tom, did refer to the tables-turned designs. I assume that the Pro-dancers had more say than the stars for most of their costumes.

Melissa and Tony started out the show, dancing the Argentine Tango. I LOVED her costume! It was classy and tailored, with stoned black mesh over glitzy red, leaving bands of color on the nice diagonal angles of the costume. The so-current, one-shouldered design, fun back strapping, banded slit and flower accent all came together for a stunning look. Bravo! Melissa gets a big 10 from me, while Tony, in his debonair red pin-stripe on black, suit with black shirt and red tie gets an 8.

Lawrence promised to cover up Edyta, for his Mamas sake. And he did! Read on for more of my weekly critique on Dancing With the Stars costuming...

Lawrence promised to cover up Edyta, for his Mamas sake. And he did! Edyta came out in a long flowing coat, replete with stoning and complete with faux fur collar and long sleeves. She later danced out of it to reveal a very beautiful dip-dyed light to medium to dark blue silk chiffon, I think, gown for their waltz. It featured some asymmetrical neckline details and one drape that covered up her head, during one ill-fated move! It had those nasty orange-nude elastics, but they were mostly not very distracting.

Lawrence was very dapper in a matching suit with a jacquard or embroidered satin lapel-I could not tell which, with medium blue satin buttons and pocket hanky. Both get a 9 from me, on costume design. And I really loved the monochromatic look!

Lil Kim only gets a 7 from me, for the plainness of her pink costume. She danced a so-so Rumba that matched. Her score-from me, was raised by virtue of having a top that covered enough that she was not in danger of another costume malfunction, and the chiffon drape camouflaged her bountiful hips nicely. The bra and briefs were glitzy and modest, but the general feel of the costume, was that it was pretty boring. Taking away from her score-from me, was the orange-nude elastic straps for her bra. Beaded straps would have been much prettier, especially since it was so plain, to begin with. Lil Kim needed some pizzazz! Derek, her partner was wearing a black shirt and pant with a tacked on, untied pink bow tie. This rated a 5 from me. Boring.

Thankfully, Chuck did a bang-up job in the fringe for Julianne! We heard last week to expect some fringe! I usually do not like really long fringe, but with her modest chest, it looked good, attached at 3 levels, but all ending at the same mini-skirt finished length. She wore an attached, modestly cut leotard that had a cute shape to it, with lots of rhinestones. The only disappointment-those blasted orange-nude elastic straps! Chuck went all-out, with his matching silk satin shirt, open at the neck, with a nice collar and beaded banding down the front. His red pant was very fluid, with beaded banding on the sides. Thankfully the pant was made out of a matte-finished fabric, probably a knit, rather than satin. Hot looks worn by this couple! They both rate a 9 from me.

Ty wore a plaid, collared vest with his basic woven, white shirt, deep red tie and basic brown pant. Thankfully the country-inspired vest did not have western yoking. He gets a 7 for his outfit, while I think he did a nice job on Chelsies coral print gown. She mentioned she had a hand in the designing, as Ty first suggested denim shorts for her to wear for their waltz! I give her a 9 for her costume. It was very pretty, with ruched bodice and just enough glitz.

But then, finally, Shawn and Mark BOTH get a big 10 from me, for their costuming! Dancing a dynamite Cha-Cha to a Michael Jackson song, Mark was decked out in a stoned black jacket, skinny bow tie, white shirt, short pant with beaded-stoned white sox! Shawn looked incredible in her black-beaded fringed dress with asymmetrical color-blocked beige-silver sections on it. It was very sexy, yet modest, pretty and very flattering with the diagonal lines. Did you notice the REAL STRAPS, along with how the stoning was used to soften the transition from black to nude-silver? Really nicely done!

Oh, but then we come to sexy Gilles in his brown suit with yellow satin tie and shirt. Handsome, yet boring, I give him an 8. But I only can give Cheryl a 5! Her shiny yellow Viennese Waltz dress was amateurish in its look. And it was not at all flattering for Cheryl. It was too boxy looking. There was something wrong with the proportion of the two layers of the skirt on her dress. It just did NOT look good. It had nice back strapping and a trimmed Basque waistline, but it just was not flattering at all.

And last, but not least, was the group dance, which was a tribute to the Sixties. And we were reminded-the early 60s, not the hippie-later 60s. For those of us who lived the sixties, that is important, you know!!  It was nicely costumed in all black and white, big and bold. Well, the big and bold was right, and the effect was interesting and fun. But a side note-the early sixties were very colorful, so something seemed just not right, for me. The silhouettes were very right, and the details were right on. Oops, that was a late sixties statement-sorry! Both the costumes and the dancing for this portion of the show were nicely done.

Generally, I think that the Stars did a nice job with costume designing for this show! Many really exciting and flattering looks, with a few boring costumes and some that just did not flatter the dancer. Kind of like other weeks, right?

And it was so much fun to see Edyta covered up! Lawrence-if you need a costume design job-just email me!
