Free MAKEUP GUIDE: what EVERY dancer should know

Dear Dancers,

As a professional dancer, I regularly saw beautiful dancers that would apply the most horrific versions of stage makeup.  They actually looked UGLY after they put their makeup on because their natural beauty was completely blocked by BAD MAKEUP!

I read a recent post on a popular dance website that was telling dancers to "look at how drag queens do their makeup and try to copy them"...yikes!  Oh, and that your makeup is supposed to look a little "harsh" because it is for stage.  What???

Awhile back, I went to see a Broadway show.  The lead performer was a great singer and dancer but I just didn't "believe" her.  I realized, as I was watching the show, that even though I was in the front row I could not see her face!  She had hardly any makeup on, was washed out (sickly looking) and I could not see her eyes.  I did not care much about her or the story she was telling because I could not SEE the emotion.

As a studio owner, at dress rehearsal for our first recital, I saw my dancer's horrendously distorted little clown faces.  I had worked so hard to create a professional looking production.   My heart dropped as I realized I had forgotten this one detail - makeup classes (as if I had time!)  I was shocked to see what parents and dancers thought makeup for stage was supposed to look like.

As a makeup artist/educator, I tour with a competition company and see either clown-like faces or dancers that think "the natural" look (i.e.: little or no makeup) will work on stage.  I teach makeup classes for teachers, parents, and dancers at conventions as well, and I get asked the SAME questions about stage makeup every weekend.

FACT:  Stage makeup ideas for dancers have been passed down from generation to generation from dancer to dancer without any professional guidance.  No one has ever questioned if the information passed down was even true or current!  Most stage makeup books are geared towards actor's and character makeup.  They do not address dancer's specific needs and are often out-dated, too technical or boring.  Dancers are left helpless and frustrated with little information that pertains to them.

I wrote this guide for three main reasons:

1) As a makeup artist/educator, I was getting the same questions (and seeing the same mistakes!) every weekend at competitions and conventions.  What seemed like such basic common knowledge about makeup to me was surprisingly "big news" to dancers, moms, and teachers.

2) It is the makeup guide I wish had had to give my dancers when I owned my studio.

3) There are no resources for dancers to use to find information about makeup for stage performancers.

This guide will help you understand the effective use of makeup for stage performances and answer the most frequently asked questions about performance makeup.  These are very basic concepts that EVERY dancer should know.  The guide also includes a Dance Makeup Kit checklist to ensure that you have everything you need and nothing you don't.  After reading this guide, you will have a much better understanding of how to look and feel beautiful on stage.  You will also be able to avoid common mistakes and focus on what is most important - dancing your heart out!
