DWTS-Season 8:Week 6 Costume Critique

Sensual yet demure on Shawn!

Sensual yet demure on Shawn!

As I mentioned in my blog about last weeks costuming, this week, the costumes are not as dramatic and sophisticated. The All-American Jive stirs images of the 1940s and 1950s, which were not the most romantic of historic periods. Women were put to work in factories, replacing their men who were defending world freedom, around the globe, and then, when they came back, were relegated to the home to make and raise babies. To me, the provocative 1920s and the steamy, sensual 1930s are much more glamorous times in our fashion history.

The Sensual Rumba evokes steamy Latin romantic lust, and can produce more beautiful costuming, although it can be skimpy. In skipping to the second dance of the evening, where Shawn and Mark presented the Rumba, the announcer stated the phrase-AGE APPROPRIATE COSTUMING. He was absolutely correct. At a rather shy 17, Shawn would have been totally out of place in a skimpy and provocative outfit. Instead, Randall achieved perfection. Even though Shawn was wearing a bra-top and panty, with only a sheer chiffon drape, she was alluring, yet virginal. The drape covered her nicely-flattering her gymnastically muscled thighs. The drape provided a veil of camouflage that kept her looking very demure. Mark wore a matching sheer shirt with scattered rhinestones. Both dancers had plenty of glitz to sparkle on the dance floor.

How did everyone else look? Read on!

Too plain for me on Steve-O and Lacey!

Melissa and Tony also danced the Rumba. The dip dying on her skirt coordinated with Tonys sheer shirt, which was similar to Marks shirt. All-in-all, an attractively costumed couple, both with embellishment. Repeating myself from last weeks critique, I am definitely NOT a fan of Melissas rhinestoned tattoo on the small of her back. Whos idea is this?

The worst costuming of the evening was for Steve-O and Lacey, for their Rumba. If this was So You Think You Can Dance, it would have fit right in, with last years costumes. Steve-O was wearing a regular shirt over a W-B T-shirt, with too-wide legged dance pants. Lacey was wearing a lingerie costume, complete with bra, top-pant and kimono-wrap robe. It was pretty, but just too plain for what I expect for Dancing With the Stars. My opinion. The cut of each garment was great, and I understand the themed performance for the duo. But as someone pointed out, when the other Steve was still in the competition-maybe costumes could distract from the really poor dancing?

My favorite Rumba costume was the last costume of the show. Julianne wore an incredibly sexy stretch black lace A-line dress with open back, fingerless gloves and thigh-high hose. Steamy! And suitable, for she was dancing with her MAN! Chuck wore a matching sheer, black lace shirt with unbuttoned satin cuffs. And many Swarovski rhinestones for all! Both were adorable in their sexy-naughty apparel! Hot-hot-hot!!!

Ty and Chelsie started off the show, dancing the Jive. Ty was suitably attired in a rhinestone-yoked black western shirt, huge belt buckle-I assume from his own collection and western hat. They Jived to a western song. Chelsie tried to do-si-do in her square-dance black petticoat and rhinestoned flag top. Hmmmm. I did not like her outfit at all. I would have taken her costume a different direction, perhaps something more along the lines of the fabulous Jive costume that Cheryl wore.

I was excited to see my honey-bunny-sorry for the Easter reference-Warren Sapp helping Lawrence out, to get him into a proper Jive mood! It seemed to help. Lawrence was stylin in his suit with hot coral shirt! And his dancing was better than usual. He does not match Warrens fab steps, but he was lookin good!

Edyta-I loved the beaded, fringed miniskirt and top-never mind the lovely orange-nude elastic on the back. And she tends to love adding distracting drapes of fabric to camouflage her dynamite body. But I am really not a fan of her bell-bottom knee sox!! I know she has worn them before, and I assume she felt she needed a splash of color on her legs. Not a fan! The hot coral color was great and the fabrics and trims used were great. But not her best look.

Derek surprised me with another really boring costume. He wore a black and white jailbird shirt, sneakers and simple black shirt and pant. Fellas, take note-you too, can pull a costume like this together, you do not need Randall! Lil Kim shook everything she had, in her 2-piece charcoal gray-or blue police-inspired Jive costume. It was busty, cute and fit with their music and routine, but pretty ho-hum.

Cheryl did NOT disappoint this week! Her leather-look vest with glitzy attached bra top was exquisite. Her skirt was equally exquisite. This was an exceptionally classy Jive costume! Her flip skirt with hot pink edging was unique and extremely flattering on Cheryl. I LOVE the skirt waistline, which I have seen on her before. Notice the deep V front AND back, starting close to her natural waistline. This is a very unique cut that is perfect for Cheryl-making her hourglass figure look amazing! What can I say about Gilles? He was hot in his leather-look vest with front and side buckle closures. Both Gilles and Cheryl had stoned fleur de lies emblems on the back of their vests.

So some ho-hum designs and then some Yes-Yes-Yes looks! I am looking forward to the results show with Macys Stars of Dance and spotlight dances by the pros, how about you? And then I will have to wait until next week to get my next fix of Dancing With the Stars!
