Oscar winning actress, Cate Blanchett is the Artistic Director. Mr Giorgio Armani is the patron. I am introducing you to Sydney Theatre Company, home performance venue for the world renowned, Sydney Dance Company. What an amazing venue to house such an incredible dance company. All so shiny and modern, this artsy, wharf side complex encases a book store, bar, restaurant and state of the art theatres.
I recently attended STC to watch Sydney Dance Company`s performance of MERCURY. I must say, simplicity speaks volumes boldly.

With creature like beginnings of an animalistic tone, ripples of the back scrolling like a wave altering the dancer`s body in precise form and dimension with every inch of fluidity of movement. Muscle control; check!

Black on white, a time defiant effect of staging enabling magnificent silhouette sfx and emphasizing the shapes carefully created by one of Europe`s most revered choreographers, Kenneth Kvarnstrom of Finland. Kvarnstrom was the director of the Helsinki City Theatre Dance Company and of the esteemed Dansens Hus in Stockholm and is now realizing his creative energies to his own company, K. Kvarnstrom & Co. He is constructing commissioned works for Gothenburg Ballet, Helsinki Dance Company, Finnish National Ballet and Sydney Dance Company.

Mercury`s movements in general, were performed with an effortless outcome and managed to deliver poignant moments amongst the quiet, yet powerful presence that the dancers had on stage. Most enjoyable was the play on gender forms and norms.
A giant rotating looking and magnifying glass, simple and at the same time conceptually complex circles of movement within encased space became as important to the piece as the choreography. Volcanic ash dropping from above and being danced in, through and around was a Mercury highlight.

I was yearning for more outward intention and a little more perfection of harmonious timing. However, this smooth but edgy piece leaves you thinking, questioning and determining your own take on Kvarnstrom`s creation.
