Sneak Peak: October's Broadway/Jazz Issue

This month's issue of Dancer Magazine takes you inside the worlds of Broadway and Jazz Dance, with a cover story featuring not one, not two, but three revival musicals! More after the jump!

On the cover this month is a scene from "Bye, Bye Birdie," one of three 1960s era revival musicals hitting NYC this year. Also featured are "West Side Story" and the newly open hippie jam fest, "HAIR." The cover story by Meryl Cates interviews the three choreographers responsible for the musicals, and breaks down their very different methods in reconstructing, and sometimes reinventing, choreography for a modern audience, and how teachers can use these methods for their own students.

My inspiration for this month's cover design was 1960s albumn covers, specifically "Hard Day's Night" by The Beatles. Maybe it's just that The Beatles are everywhere right now-on Rockband, in commercials, but mostly on remasterd CDs constantly playing on my iTunes. Either way, I can't shake it. I was raised on 60s music, listening to "The White Album" in the womb, and as a designer I was enthralled to make a design inspired by my music heroes. What's the connection between The Beatles and the dance? Because I feel that The Beatles' music and the scores of each of these musicals is a part of the same universe, it's iconic music which defined this generation. After all, how can you think about the dance in any of these musicals without thinking about the music as well? Its a pretty intimate connection.

Anyway, I really hope you all enjoy the new issue, hitting your mailboxes any day. May it inspire you to dust off your LP of "Let the Sun Shine," put on your old jeans, and make something fresh and new out of something old.
