Not Just Another Elimination Dance Show

Over the past years, we have seen an onslaught of elimination dance shows.  It seems every channel has created its own version to appeal to their demographic.  In an age that seems to have been taken over by reality television, it is no surprise that dance has nestled itself comfortably into the genre.  The public has always been somewhat fascinated with dance.  We can see it manifested in the clothing we wear and the movies teens flock to see. With a reality show based on every other profession, however obscure, I have always been a little surprised there isn't one dedicated dance.  It may just be that dancers or performers do not want a camera following them around day in and out, or perhaps, their daily lives lack the excessive drama needed to sustain viewers from week to week.

In a Washington Post interview in late August with choreographer Christopher Wheeldon, the writer's final question struck an interesting note.  She asked would Wheeldon ever consider a reality show about his company Morphoses/The Wheeldon Company?  He replied that he met with Bravo (the king of reality shows), but they slowly lost interest after discovering there would not be enough contention between the dancers.

The idea of a dance reality show versus a dance elimination show might be a breath of fresh air.  A budding dance company seemed to be a great catalyst for a television show's success, as the cameras would follow the trials and tribulations of Wheeldon's choreography and of his dancers.  It would be a great way to expose a different side of dance to the public, one that doesn't just focus on the finished product of a performance, but an inside look into a dancer and choreographer's daily life.

I suppose the stereotype of dancer fits, tantrums, and explosions hardly hit the radar of drama next to the "celebrity" meltdowns.  Wheeldon even smartly expressed his desire to "move away from those cliches".

The little story behind the interview question is indeed no drama, no show.   So, Project Rehearsal, Choreographing with the Stars, or for the VH1 fans, Rock of Dance will not be coming to a TV set near you any time soon.
