YES! Award Shows DO Provide Dance Costume Inspiration!

A Fashion Lowlight from the EMMYS

A Fashion Lowlight from the EMMYS

I am excited to see that one of my earliest blogs continues to be well read.  My blog titled SHOULD AWARD SHOWS PROVIDE INSPIRATION FOR DANCE COSTUME DESIGNS? includes lots of really good information.

The EMMY Awards were just on, this last week, and there will be more award shows to come.  The comedy was a little sketchy, on the show, but the gowns continued to be VERY inspirational.

I still love the rehashing of the styles with the Fashion Police and seeing what handful of dresses are picked to be reproduced by a mass-producer of inexpensive special-occasion gowns.  I usually am able to pick the ones that are most noticed and mass-produceable.  Most I love, and some, I hate!

The highlights?

The citrus colors done in fabulous silhouettes with elegant fabrics and trims.  I read somewhere, that lesser known designers are sometimes featured during the EMMYS. It is fun to see the top designer dresses, but for me, just as fun, if not MORE fun, to see unknown designers.

The bright orange chiffon gown, and was it beading or sequins?, that Julia Louis-Dreyfus wore, was stunning.  The daffodil yellow, silk chiffon gowns that Mariska Hargity and Teri Hatcher wore, were so elegant and refined.  And Christina Applegate looked incredible in her Grecian inspired column dress!  These will all be reinterpreted for many a lyrical dance dress, right?  And so many more beautiful and flattering gowns!

The lowlights?  Well, let me just say that Eva Longoria Parkers little silver number was interesting.

I am a dyed-in-the-wool, Minnesotan of Swedish heritage.  If you have studied our Minnesotan speech oddities, well, interesting really means, what was she thinking??? I repeat, it was interesting! I like quirky little OR BIG, details.  Eva is petite enough that she could pull off a big bow right over her bustline, well, sort of.  I am thinking, not so much an option for most of the Hollywood silicone valleys-and hills! What do you think? The correct proportions are a big part of what works, style and design-wise, on a person.

But the SHOCKING part of her dress was the layers of fringe.  I rarely say this, but this is a case where a danceable dress was NOT a good look or plan for the usually stylish Mrs. Parker!  I will try to erase this image from my mind, when I watch the promos for Desperate Housewives, with all the ladies in their beautiful red gowns.  Each and every one of those red dresses is fabulous.

So did Evas stylist get the day off?  I am just now recalling all the beautiful gowns that Eva wore during the ALMA awards, back in August.  I understand that Eva wore all Latino designers gowns for the show.  She is the executive producer of the telecast and showcased about ten different gowns, complete with different coordinating hairstyles.  I enjoyed all those looks, but the silver fringed number she wore to the EMMYS was a HUGE disappointment!

By the way DO NOT MISS the ALMAS.  It was fabulous!  Besides all of Evas gowns, the performers were really entertaining.  Lots of dancing, including The Cheetah Girls and several dancers from DANCING WITH THE STARS-last season.  Many, many costumes, not to mention, lots of wonderful performances.  In my opinion, it was much more entertaining than the lame efforts at humor at the EMMYS.

But still, do not miss any opportunity to get inspired with costuming visual treats, from where ever you see costumes or fashions. Any little detail, whether it is a silhouette, a color, a fabric combination, or any of those designer styling details could be incorporated into a stylish and winning dance costume design. They give our imagination a kick in the behind!

Speaking of behinds, I am thrilled that DANCING WITH THE STARS has started again.  Viewing all of the thirteen new couples in two costumes each, were truly inspiring this week.  LOVED some and HATED some!  But that is the fun of escapism television! Oh, and my new dance hero is Warren Sapp, who was SOOOOOO dapper, personable and LIGHT on this feet, on the show this week!

More about this chubby athlete and his dance togs, soon!
