BEings: Works in Progress Series - Tomorrow!

Dance New Amsterdam

Dance New Amsterdam

The Works in Progress Series at Dance New Amsterdam is officially tomorrow (September 20th, 5:30pm, be there!).  I have been talking about this show in the blog for a few weeks now, so as you can probably imagine my miniature anxiety attack about how it is going to go started up late last night at rehearsal.  Those who know me know that I have the utmost faith that the show will be fine, but until the show actually IS fine I turn into an Emily blob of anxiety.  I do not know how others handle their stress, but that is pretty much how mine goes on the day of a show.  So anyway, the things that have been happening to prepare for tomorrows show; a fire alarm, the wrong shorts, and very sleepy people.

Our last two rehearsals have been interesting, for lack of a fancier adjective to describe them.  As I think I have mentioned before, we usually rehearse at Ripley Grier Studios because they are open late.  Sunday night at about 9:15 (15 minutes into rehearsal) the fire alarm goes off.  So dramatic!  We had no idea if it was a drill or the real thing, and no one else around seemed to know either.  No better method of company bonding than to have a communal panic attack, right?!  There the five of us were just waiting to find out if we needed to get the heck out of the building and not even building security knew exactly what was going on (thats New York for ya).  Finally, a voice came on over the alarm system assuring us that it was just a test (keeping in mind this was 25 minutes after it had originally gone off).  I guess deep down we figured there could not possibly be a fire in the building at 9:00 on Sunday night!  Also, amongst there being a potential fire, I ordered the girls the wrong shorts.  Lanteri New York makes two versions of booties, the short and the super short.  They are both really great options, but I mistakenly ordered the super short.  Severe oops on my behalf because they were simply too short on my dancers, and there is no reason to put a dancer onstage in poorly fitting clothes.  Big thanks to Lanteri New York for exchanging them for me the very next day, they did not have to.

Last nights rehearsal started off a little rocky as well.  It is hard to walk in to rehearsal after a long day at 10pm and be fully functioning; mentally and physically or either one quite honestly.  The first place I can think of wanting to be is bed, the second maybe the couch, the third is at least somewhere in my apartment; you see where I am headed with this one.  Rehearsals that start at 10pm are now on my list of things to try to avoid.  Even when we go 9-11, there is just a big difference between starting at 9 and starting at 10.  The first time the piece was run, I may have actually been slightly horrified.  Maybe that sounds dramatic or mean, but the show is tomorrow!  I pretended I had not seen it and we ran it again; so much better!  I can realistically say that the last time we ran it last night, it looked good; better than good.  I was/am pleased with it.

Today we are going to have our last rehearsal (unless it needs one tomorrow!) before the show.  Full dress, full out, the whole shebang!  The more I think about it, the more comfortable I feel in presenting the work tomorrow; although that could change entirely between now and the end of rehearsal this afternoon.
Anyway, if you are in New York, come out to Dance New Amsterdam tomorrow!  The show starts at 5:30, and lots of fun people are planning on coming; I will be there, my dancers, the ever wonderful Lindsay Dreyer is planning on making an appearance.  It is guaranteed to be a good time!!

For those of you who cannot make it; BEings will be posting the performance video here on DancerFlix after the show!
