School of Rock and the "Beat It" Walk

Suddenly Jack Black...
as Dewey Finn in School of Rock comes to my mind. I'm struck by his Michael Jackson Beat It walk in a slight demi-plie as he flicks his right wrist with snapping fingers and struts his teaching prowess towards Joan Cusack a/k/a Principal Rosalie Mullins of the super-elite Horace Green prep school. Black as Finn is Beat It-walking in a dive bar complete with dim lights, dartboard, hairy and studded ne'er-do-wells and smoke-filled air to the sweet sounds of Stevie Nicks' "Edge of Seventeen," supposedly a Miss Mullins fave. Finn and Mullins have been bonding while espousing their teaching theories and philosophies. But it is in this moment that this scene comes alive--when Dewey immerses himself into his rocking Beat It-walk, prompting Miss Mullins to pull a complete set of jazz hands down en avant of her face. Jack has unleashed the staunch Principal Mullins. They are dancing in this quirky, mainstream and award-winning movie, and it moves us. This is the stuff I love! This is the dance we all enjoy and can't help but relate to: dance for and about all of us. Everyday People. Welcome to my new blog.
