TV Show "Fashion Rocks 5"-Rocked the House!
With all the dancers, singers, dancing singers and singing dancers along with many dressed up celebrities, this benefit concert spotlighted trendsetting fashions and stage costumes, wonderfully.
I miss the old variety shows from their heyday in the late 1960s. My costume-fashion designer hero, Bob Mackie, designed over-the-top costumes for all the entertainers on The Carol Burnett Show and The Sonny and Cher Show, two of the biggest variety shows. Mr. Mackie inspired me to go for the glitz and glamour in my career!
Today, the newest television shows are reality shows. The reality shows of my youth were called variety shows. They featured a variety of entertainment, from singers, dancers, comedians, humorous skits or sketches, and occasionally an off-beat juggler or unusual visual entertainer. Most were videotaped before live audiences.
I was thrilled to tune in for Fashion Rocks-5 this week! I also enjoyed watching the VMA award show on Sunday night. OK, I had to find out if Britney Spears would do a repeat performance from last year!
If you have been reading my blogs, you know that I LOVE watching awards shows. I love to see all the Red Carpet fashions, and it is always a bonus to see entertainers, especially dancing acts. These are generally visual treats for me, and serve as inspiration for future costume designs.
Back to Fashion Rocks-5! This 21st century variety show featured so many currently popular entertainers. It was a tribune show, which featured the music genres from the last several decades. Punk, Disco, Motown to name a few. The performers of today gave a fresh interpretation of some classics. I think this production had something for everyone! The show featured young and old, with Miley Cyrus and Debra Harry. The hot and the cool, with Beyonce doing a tribute to Etta James. The old and the new, with George Thorogood and Solange.
I have been searching Online, to find more images from this fashion and costume-packed event, without seeing many. You will find a photo gallery if you google fashion rocks, but not many are available yet, for the 2008 show. I look forward to seeing more Online, and in the fashion magazines. Seeing the show initially is great, but I like to take a lingering look at the most inspiring looks!
Rihanna opened the show in a glitzy gold little outfit plus lots of feathers! Beyonce, Fergie, Pussycat Dolls, Mariah, Solange, Carrie Underwood and many, many others light up the stage.
The event took place at my favorite venue in New York City, Radio City Music Hall, an incredible theater, where I have had the privilege to see the Christmas Spectacular several times, with my favorite kickline, the Rockettes! The backstage tour is really interesting, with lots of history told, and shown. I confess that I have also had a private tour of Radio City, including an up-close, in-depth look at the costuming, including a few Bob Mackie pieces, courtesy of a former creative director of the Radio City Christmas Spectacular, Bruce Michael, a few years ago.
This event showcases the marriage of music and fashion. The star-studded concert and bash that kicked off New York Fashion Week is in its fifth year. Proceeds will benefit Stand up to Cancer, a program established by the Entertainment Industry Foundation to raise money for cancer research. An associated eBay auction is running through September 15th. You can bid on items donated by Fashion Rocks presenters and performers.
In Minneapolis, we have a similar fashion and music showcase, without the cancer foundation benefit. It benefits the local up and coming fashion designers and musicians and takes place in the spring at our legendary First Avenue, the club that Prince made famous. One of our past Satin Stitches designer-patternmakers, Kerry Riley is one of the featured designers of Voltage-Fashion Amplified. It is always a fun and interesting show.
Next year, do not miss this show! Great fashion inspiration, wonderful music, and entertaining DANCING!
