An Upcoming Book with a New Look

When taking a seat at your first dance history class you know you are in store for a parade of significant names.  Many lessons will be devoted to the bigwigs of dance and their internal motives that acted as inspiration.  There was King Louis XVI of France who was one of the pioneers of large-scale dance performances and spectacle-like productions.   Those like Diaghilev and Ruth St. Denis will surely be studied, but without a doubt there will be an exploration of Isadora Duncan and her contributions to modern dance.

The "mother of modern dance", Duncan's prolific repertory of choreography, vast anthropological knowledge, and unique lifestyle have made her more than just an influential person, but a compelling character.   There have been so many books written in honor of her life that it seems a small library could be filled.  However, a new book due in about a month will display Duncan in graphic art and imagery, and I don't think this will be another one of your average biographies.

The author, Sabrina Jones, has used her talents as a graphic artist in a book that hopes to command new attention to a woman who has forever been exotically fascinating.  Isadora Duncan: A Graphic Biography will be released on November 11th in hardcover.  This will be the first time Duncan is portrayed in comic book-like drawings, but is fitting as her life held some unorthodox choices and can be seen as almost heroic in her efforts towards dance innovation.

It's a sure thing that this will be anything but a dry textbook, so it's refreshing to see the collaboration of dance and graphic art in celebration of someone who invigorated the world of dance.
