So let me begin by introducing myself and my blog.  I'm Emily, the new intern here at Dancer Magazine.  Aside from that, I'm also a sophomore in college, a workstudy at Broadway Dance Center, and for the main purpose of this blog, a choreographer with aspirations of having a successful company!  I will be posting on here regularly about all the fun and not necessarily so fun aspects of trying to start a company in Manhattan, and obviously about my company BEings!!

I know most people hear all that and think I've lost my mind - how could any 19yr old possibly be ready to take on such a daunting task?  I'm sure I'll have days where I hate my life... or my dancers (or both!) but it's a process and there's no quick fix.
So let's start at the beginning of how this craziness that is BEings came to be.
I've always known I wanted to dance - since I was two (that counts as always), but I didn't always know I'd love the aspect of putting choreography on dancers and enabling them to feel what I feel and make it theirs.  Isn't that so cliche sounding; 'to feel what I feel,' but it's true and I guess that's why we hear things like that so often as dancers.  Anyway, continuing...
A friend I met by chance at dancing school offered to be my choreography 'guinea pig.' We worked on some chor and I decided to apply for the Steps Lab Series (a program at Steps on Broadway for emerging artists to present work and receive audience feedback).  Well the rest of that is history because the piece was accepted and Elise and I both made our NYC debut; her as a dancer, and myself as a choreographer!  When I could finally bring myself to look at the audience's response sheets, I was elated when almost every one of them was positive!
Continuing on this journey, I went home to Florida for two weeks during break from school and had some serious thinking time.  After the Steps Lab, I'd had a few people approach me asking if I needed dancers and I somewhat hesitantly said maybe, not really knowing if I did or not.  During my time at home, the idea of BEings came to light; at which point I talked to those who had shown interest.  It's been great because most of the interested parties were my friends (who also happen to be incredibly talented artists) - perfect scenario!
BEings is currently comprised of 6 wonderful dancers: Elise, Claire, Missy, Molly, Amber, and Philip.  I look forward to being able to share what will surely be an interesting journey with you.  We have rehearsal this weekend so be sure to keep your eyes out for a new posting and feel free to e-mail me at emilybufferd@danceruniverse.com if you have any questions about BEings or the dancers.
