When Stewie Met Kelly

Last night I was watching a completely brilliant and hilarious episode of "Family Guy," in which Stewie and Brian (the baby and the dog, for those who don't know) take a cross-country trip to Aspen, Colorado to retrieve Stewie's teddy bear Rupert. In order to barter for a helicopter over the mountains, the duo must perform a song and dance. Not satisfied with a simple funny tune, "Family Guy" took it up a notch and paired Stewie with none other than Gene Kelly! The number is a spoof on the 1945 film "Anchors Aweigh," where Kelly originally performed with Jerry Mouse. Take a look:

I love that "Family Guy" isn't afraid to go out on a limb to please its audience. And it's interesting to see that a dance film made in 1945 can still be impressive and relevant. Granted, it's now used as a form of kitsch, but the movements themselves continue to be awe-inspiring. It's sad that Hollywood can't invest in another marquee dancer like Kelly and build films around him or her like they used to. At least we can count on "Family Guy" to showcase those "good ole fashioned values...on which we used to rely!"
