Violette et Mr. B
This film, Violette et Mr. B , is part of what seems like a really interesting series called Dominique Delouche: Ballet Cineaste, which will run from July 23 through July 27 at Lincoln Center's Walter Reade Theater.
There will be two screenings of Violette et Mr. B, one at 6pm on July 26 and the other at 2pm on July 27.
During my training, I not only took class with Violette numerous times, but I also had to opportunity to get to know her on a more personal level when I spent 2 summers dancing at Chautauqua. She is a fascinating woman who speaks openly and candidly about her life as a dancer and her experiences with Balanchine.
Here is more information about Violette et Mr. B courtesy of the Film Society of Lincoln Center:
Violette Verdy was one of Balanchine's muses at New York City Ballet, a favored principal dancer who, in 19 years with the company, inspired such masterpieces as Liebeslieder Walzer, the "Emeralds" section of Jewels, and Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux. Delouche delightfully captures her enthusiasm and exuberance, which she has now transferred to her work as a distinguished professor of music at Indiana University. "Violette is algebra," said her mentor Roland Petit, "Balanchine chose her because she possessed theatrical alchemy." A ten-minute segment of Jerome Robbins coaching Monique Loudieres and Manuel Legris, etoiles of the Paris Opera, in In the Night (1990) will precede the film. Verdy and Delouche will participate in a Q&A following the 6:00 p.m. screening on Saturday, July 26.
Unfortunately, I won't be able to make it to either screening. But if you're around in the city make sure you check it out! A Q&A with Violette is a real treat you won't want to miss.
