Dance In the News
One of my favorite websites (besides DancerUniverse), the highly reputable literary and political site Salon.com, has published two interesting and informative articles on dance in the last week. The first article, called "So You Think They Can Break-Dance?" is by writer Jeff Chang, a hip-hop historian who explores the b-boy scene in South Korea. A little late in coming (those of us familiar with hip-hop can tell you that Korea's breaking skills have been buzzed about for the better part of the decade), the article does provide a well-researched back story to the reasons for hip-hop's popularity in the Asian country. It's a good in-depth read!
The second article is a collective review of this summer's dance offerings from TV crtic Heather Havrilesky. Seemingly having no dance experience herself, Havrilesky nevertheless provides some thoughtful commentary on SYTYCD and ABDC (America's Best Dance Crew). It's particularly interesting to see how dance shows can draw in even those who are uninformed on the artform. Of course, not all of her reviews are positive. She had some scathing words for Dance Machine and Step It Up and Dance. Check out the article yourself and feel free to leave comments! The more Salon realizes the impact of dance, the more articles we may see in mainstream publications. Dare to dream!
