"The Raw and the Cooked" Explores Dance at The Tank

One of the best things about living in New York City is the plethora of artsy activities to explore and participate in. There's a creative energy that permeates the city, something that makes New York such an exciting and unique place to live.

Recently, I just learned about a really cool monthly dance series that takes place at The Tank, a performance space for the exporation of non-traditional works by upcoming artists and performers. The series is called "The Raw and the Cooked" and it combines both choreography and improvisation while also incorporating live music and video mixed-media curated by Tatyana Tenenbaum.

Find out more about "The Raw and the Cooked" after the jump!

The next installment of "The Raw and the Cooked" will take place on May 22nd. Here is the press release I received from Tatyana:

About the Show:
The Raw and the Cooked is a monthly forum for interdisciplinary improvisation including music, dance, video mixed-media curated by Tatyana Tenenbaum.  Each performance features "Raw," improvised performance by electronic and acoustic musicians, and dancers.  "Cooked" work focuses on the role of improvisation within choreographed and composed performance.  Known for its lively and adventurous and atmosphere for performer and audience member alike, The Raw and the Cooked is quickly growing as a meeting ground for experimental, cross-genre collaboration.

The May show will feature "Cooked" performance by Seth Alt and Michael Duffy.  Influenced by the woods, hills, and rivers of south-western Wisconsin, Seth Alt is an ambitious creator, multimedia collage artist, and improviser.  Together with multi-instrumentalist Michael Duffy, the duo creates live performance with images, contact microphones and electronics.  Seamlessly integrated into "Raw" performances by Peter Evans, Josh Sinton, Paul Pinto, Adam Schniet, Steve Menotti, Isabelle Castellvi, Laurel Steinhouser, Sarah Downs and Tenaya Keller, don't miss this night of dance, music and media.

About The Tank:
A non-profit organization, The Tank opened its doors on May 31, 2003, its mission to provide a welcoming, creative, collaborative, and affordable environment for artists and activists engaged in the pursuit of new ideas.  It quickly became known as a center for unconventionality where creativity, community, and risk-taking prevailed over money, competition, and exclusivity.

Over the past four years, The Tank has presented over a thousand live and special events in theater, film, comedy, dance, public affairs, and mixed media and music.  New works find a home, artists find an environment where they can devise as well as present, and audiences find welcoming ticket prices for a dynamic schedule that has given nontraditional programming a stage in the heart of Manhattan.

The tank is located at 279 Church Street between Franklin and White.

Anyone want to come with me on May 22nd? This dance series sounds too cool to miss!

Interesting! With Dance New Amsterdam and the Tank, looks like Tribeca might be a new hotspot for dance.
