A Little Bit of "Discipline" Puts Janet Back on Top
After her now infamous "wardrobe malfunction" at the 2004 Super Bowl halftime show, Janet Jackson faced an up-hill battle as many began to question the validity of her career. When her much anticipated come-back album 20 Y.O. flopped in 2006, the music industry was ready to write her off as just another a has-been. It looked as if her career was officially coming to an end.
So what did Ms. Jackson do? She picked herself up and got back to work on her recently released album, Discipline. But she knew it would take more than a few catchy beats to reestablish herself. A come-back of this caliber would take hard work, dedication, and as her album title suggests, discipline. Janet exercised some of that discipline, literally, hitting up the gym like never before and remastering the dance moves that made her famous.
Janet Jackson, who learned the art of music video dance from choreographers like Paula Abdul and Tina Landon (in addition to her brother Michael, of course), is without a doubt one of the most dynamic performers of our time. From the sharp, syncopated movements in "Rhythm Nation" to the eyebrow raising sexuality in "If," Janet has been on the cutting edge of popular dance for 3 decades, taking risks and setting trends like nobody else.
Although the new album's debut single "Feedback" only peaked at number 51 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, the video reveals that at the age of 41, Janet still has it. While the video itself is slightly lackluster, Janet looks better than ever and moves effortlessly, exhibiting that sexy signature style we fell in love with in the 1990s.
If you haven't seen the "Feedback" video, check it out here:
Janet was even kind enough to teach Larry King some of the "Feedback" choreography when she appeared on his show on February 28:
I'm really thrilled to see Janet Jackson back in the game, learning from her mistakes (aka keeping her clothes on), and of course, dancing her butt off again.
Although dance has become a popular fixture on many reality tv shows, music videos these days lack innovation and good quality dance numbers. Perhaps Janet's return on the scene will inspire another important come-back in popular music... dance! In order to post a comment, you must be logged in.
