Lyrical Reigns Supreme
The competition season is in full swing. I have worked four weekends in a row and have seen many great tap, ballet, and jazz numbers, but found that lyrical still remains the largest section in the program. What piqued my interest this past weekend was a very good school in New Jersey that used much more subversive music. "One", a solo, was danced to the hidden track on the Damien Rice album "O" that slipped through the cracks where "The Blower's Daughter" and "Cold Water" did not.
Another interesting piece was an awesome duo to a live version of the band Something Corporate's love song "Konstantine." I have included the MP3 in this post, so make sure to have a listen. It is a song that holds meaning to many of the under-25-year-olds that I know and a song that is unfortunately (for competition) too long. The studio version is 9-minutes plus and often gets cut in the same fashion as Bohemian Rhapsody. I'd be interested in seeing if someone could do a production to the song that could incorporate the entirety of the song. I have a few lyrical songs that I would like to share that could be used "as is" for competition.
The second album of Elvis Costello's "Best of" album is like a whole album of hidden tracks. So many of the songs that most would associate with Elvis Costello are all on the first album. There is a song called "I Want You" that has the same dynamic spectrum of one voice and one instrument to a lush full sound.
