BEings: New Dancers and New Projects

I would like to begin by extending the warmest welcome to our two new dancers: Jessica Chou and Stacey Perkinson.  They are both wonderful additions to the company and did a great job performing at the 60x60 Dance show at the World Financial Centers Winter Garden.  The video of our minute long piece will be up on Dancer Flix so be sure to check that out as well as being up on YouTube!

BEings has been quite busy lately.  Aside from having three shows this past weekend, we are now rehearsing at the FAR Space, courtesy of a space grant through The Field.  It is so great being able to have consistent biweekly rehearsals in such a beautiful space.  Right now, we are working on a few new things, one of which made a few of the dancers somewhat squeamish.  It is a lot harder than some would think to sit down with a piece of paper and write down your thoughts; which is what I asked those in this piece to do.  I am not going to give away in entirety what the piece is about, but I am sure it is going to be a very interesting process working through it.  Just so you know that I am fair though, I also sat down with a pen and paper and wrote; I would not expect the dancers to do something I would not be willing to do myself. That is NOT fair!

Lots more after the jump!

Unfortunately, at the Steps Lab, I was not allowed to video tape our piece; it looked very good and it would have been nice to have.  I also am getting better at presenting my work, it is a lot harder than you would think to get up in front of an audience (large or small) and tell them about what you are presenting.  I did not realize just how personal it is until you have to tell someone about it and you turn into that awkward teenager (which I am not anymore, I am now a 20 year old; kind of an adult) who does not like sharing their feelings.  That is what talking about a piece is like; sharing something that maybe you would rather not.  I suppose that is what makes dance so moving; it really does come from deep down.

The 60x60 Dance show, however, as you will be able to see, did get taped.  Not only that, but it got reviewed in the New York Times!  So while we were not individually reviewed, we were part of something that was kind of a big deal and that is really cool.  Of course, in my excitement, I googled the show to see what else came up and discovered that one of the photographers had taken photos of my dancers.  For those of you who have not seen the Winter Garden, it is a giant atrium in the middle of the World Financial Center that has a large stage at one end and this massive staircase at the other with balcony type promenades on either side of the main floor.  At the show, there were photographers and artists sketching the dancers.  It was a big to do!

For now, BEings is rehearsing new works and hoping to have an informal showing at the beginning of January. Keep a lookout for us, we WILL be performing again soon!
