I remember looking forward to his articles in a dance magazine that came in the mail. He was a unique voice. I don't think our dance community will have another critic like him. He was fair and honest. It's true that some people saw him as grumpy and old fashioned. Without someone from an older aesthetic to keep the younger generation in check then how will we learn?

Broadway will dim their lights

If you are in NYC tonight at 8PM you can witness a rare event. All Broadway marquees will be dimmed in honor of the passing of Clive Barnes.

His words live on

I received my December copy of Dance Magazine just days ago. Clive wrote a back page column in every issue. Interestingly enough it seems the publication was issued/printed prior to his death and a large portion of this particular issue was dedicated to dance criticism. His column in this issue spoke of the "unholy craft" of this work and offered his thoughts on a career in which he spent nearly 60 years.

"No, it's not easy being a critic, but we all have our opinions in our own right, even when just expressed to a neighbor. But for the professional critic the fundamental task is to build a bridge between the artist and his audience. Easy? No. Rewarding? Enormously. And it's also not a bad way of making a modest living."
