The video for "Womanizer" premiered on 20/20 on Friday night. The director's cut of the video is after the jump.

After the jump you will also hear my feedback.

Here is the new video:

It was directed by Joseph Khan. It has his usual high tech glossy feel to the production of the video. He worked with Britney on "Stronger" and "Toxic". He also worked with Black Eyed Peas, Gwen Stefani, Janet Jackson, The Pussycat Dolls, etc. His work tends to be more visually enforced than actually telling a story to the song. His story usually entails the singer going on a journey.

I won't lie and say that I wasn't looking forward to this video. I also won't lie and say that I am not disappointed. As soon as I heard that Joseph Khan was involved I knew that it was going to have that high gloss look with zero substance. I am not saying that a video needs to solve world peace but seriously folks...... it's soooooo been done. There is one cool special effect in this video. I thought the clothes bit was fun to watch. I did think though that the effect vaguely reminded me of Madonna's "Frozen" video. Remember when Madonna burst into a bunch of crows? Yeah, basically the same effect with a different variable.

Why is this video premiering on 20/20. This isn't the first time Britney has done this. I just don't get it. Is this the demographic she is trying to impress?

Britney has been known for her dancing in her act. I don't see any progression from where she was as a dancer to where she is now. Madonna and Janet are old now. They can't keep up with the trends but back in the day Madonna and Janet were pushing the boundaries. Britney might have had a couple of Federline minis but there is no excuse for the complete lack of imagination with this choreography. I was waiting for the big dance break or even the big dance section. That part in the office was just sad and lame. It's a sad day when The Pussycat Dolls, even with their awful choreography, outshine Britney.

Remember when this clip was leaked?

Why is she rehearsing "the best of" her career's choreography? Go forward. Don't look back.  People keep calling this next stage in her career a "comeback". If we wanted a Britney Spears comeback we would have had to ignore her. Speak her name and everyone has an opinion. That doesn't sound like she went anywhere. And THAT is exactly the point of this blog. She didn't go anywhere. She didn't "wow" us. She did that same old thing.

Blog ya later,

Matthew

Same Old Crap...

But slightly less lethargic and boring than the infamous VMA performance.... which isn't saying much. However, she's looking way hotter and her hair extensions look mildly believable. That's a plus I suppose.

weave city

I think she should just chop it all off. I am so over the weave thing.

Her performance is less lethargic but where was the dancing?

Is the video's lack of dancing the aftermath of record companies cutting costs?  Or was it just laziness?

Thoughts?

britneys video

I think It is very good. A lot better than her last perfromance and i wouldnt agree wiht the articles comments. She looks 100% better, and is better than most of the other rubbish that is out there. well done britney

Dear Itsme

I have a few points for you

1: Learn how to type. The MySpace and Facebook generation of grammar and typing skills is just disgusting.

2: This website is here to talk about dance. Danceruniverse's blogs are a way for people to talk about dance in a professional manner. Your comments about that way she looks just proves that our culture is obsessed with looks and not the way that talent matures. She is a talented person. There is no way that someone would reach her caliber of success without having talent. I just don't see where she is going with it.

When I sit and judge kids I have to talk into a digital recorder to offer my critique to studios. Often when I see a talented young dancer that is coasting by on their natural talent I will get disgusted with the lack of connection that the dancer is making with the audience. This new video is exactly the same thing. We have seen this before. Britney is coasting by on her weave.

My friend emailed me this comment

"I heard this song for the first time the other day and seriously thought it was one of those mashups radio stations do. In this case I thought it was a bunch of Pussycat Dolls and Fergie and who knows what else. Never thought it was a song on its own or Britney. You're dead on about this video not having anything to remember.  That black wig is the worst and then the lame shoulder shimmy?  Ugh."
-Daisy

I love that she wrote "lame shoulder shimmy". That should be the real title of this blog.

at least her C-section scar doesn't show...

Okay- maybe a little too glass half full - lol. I agree that this video is basically Toxic but to a different, less interesting song (though I do like the line "I got your crazy"-- she certainly does).

However, I have to disagree with you about Madonna + Janet. Both of these women have maintained their figures and there moves through the years. Admittedly, Madonna has never been the best dancer, but she still holds up the same level of energy and interest, whereas Britney simply walks through her steps. Janet's choreography on recent videos like "Feedback" and "Rock with U" has been WAY more interesting and trendsetting than anything the Pussy Cat Dolls are doing. (Side note: If I see that one doll do that same standing split one more time I may throw up.) My point is M+J were cut never the same breaks as Ms. Spears-- they NEVER half-assed it-- you don't just stay in music successfully for 25 years by going through the motions.

Madonna and Janet

Let's start with off with what trendsetting means.

trendsetter
noun
a person who leads the way in fashion or ideas.

"Feedback" and "Rock Wit U" are not trendsetting. They were a compilation of current
L.A. dance trends. Janet's choreographer would have had to create the style of the movement to be consider a trendsetter. This is not the case.

What's new about these steps and the way they were choreographed? Take out the fact that Janet is doing it and you wouldn't have looked twice.

Janet and Madonna have been playing it safe for years. For some reason Madonna seems to have more of a worldwide appeal. I can't explain why our culture is fascinated with Madonna but we are. Her work has become less interesting to watch though.

For example:
When Madonna's released the video to "Hung Up" people were saying how different she was portraying herself. She took the dance studio lifestyle and set it in the hip-hop world

Now from her latest album comes her second single, "Give It To Me".
This beginning of this video seems kinda familiar, right?

Doesn't that seem "half-assed" to redo a video with the same opening and add some different special effects?

Janet does the "redo" video concept for almost all the of her videos for the past 3 albums. Her videos will have a large group of dancers all dancing in unison. The setting is a warehouse or a club. And the lighting is almost always dark. How is that pushing videos as an art form? Her tours have not been selling well. It's not because of her recent cancellations due to her mystery illness. It's because we have seen it. We are bored. Janet will always tour with giant screens, a metal tress, a large group of dancer's (in recent years wearing over-designed costumes), she is going to seduce some guy from the audience while he sits on a chair and she is going to sit into her hip while pointing her index finger into the audience anytime she says "you".  She rarely does new choreography for her hit songs. "If" was a cool dance but I can watch it on DVD if I want. People aren't going to spend money on a concert where there are little surprises.

And you are telling me that this is full out?

Some might say she needed a breather. Folks, she is lip-synching. If she needs a breather then we shouldn't see her rest. Put her backstage. Play some filler video, put in a new dance sequence to highlight the dancers and be done with it.

And Lizzie, I never mentioned anywhere in this blog or comments anything about Madonna and Janet maintaining their figures. I am talking about dance not body types.

Blech!

Brittany's career stopped being about dance a long time ago. The only thing about this video that catches my attention is the irony of a young woman and mother complaining about some guy being a womanizer while objectifying herself (and probably calling it empowerment). But, oh wait, that's way overdone too! sigh The song isn't even good!

I disagree with...

"Admittedly, Madonna has never been the best dancer."

Madonna received a dance scholarship to University of Michigan. She studied modern dance extensively and even danced with some modern dance companies before becoming an entertainer and recording artist. So the statement that she's not a good dancer is completely ill-informed. Madonna is not a commercial/street jazz/hip-hop dancer, so she can't be compared to Janet and Britney in that respect.

But the point is that neither Janet nor Madonna has done anything to further dance in recent years. Yes, they both look great for their ages and can still shake it, but the truth is they're old and outdated. Janet looks lethargic and her choreograph is very status quo LA stuff. And Madonna's reign as the queen of reinvention is over.

Now, it's the duty of the younger generations of dancers to take over, shake things up, and push the boundaries. But nobody's doing it. The Pussycat Dolls certainly aren't. And this Womanizer video proves that Britney isn't either. Not even close.
