Guys and Dolls Revival

Nathan Lane and Faith Prince in Guys and Dolls

Nathan Lane and Faith Prince in Guys and Dolls

One of my very favorite Broadway shows is returning to the Great White Way. Guys and Dolls will make its (re) debut at the Nederlander Theater in Times Square on February 3 in previews. The theater will open to the general public on March 1.

Tony and Emmy nominee Oliver Platt is set to play Nathan Detroit. Other cast members have not been announced.

Guys and Dolls was the first show I ever saw on Broadway. I was 13 and visiting my aunt Nancy in New York, who was one of the Hot Box Girls. Nathan Lane played Nathan Detroit, and I was bowled over by his brilliance. The show was snappy, swift and stylish in a Tony Bennett/Frank Sinatra kind of way.

Afterward, Nancy brought me and my family backstage to meet the cast. They seemed larger than life. I remember stepping onto the stage and squinting into the lights. I was surprised at how tilted and uneven the floor was. And then I vowed I'd be there one day.

Does anyone else have a show or movie that moved them to pursue dance as their life? It's funny: Priests often talk about a "calling" to their faith. I think dancers have similar experiences. What was yours?
