The director, Vasile Petrutiu, and Committee of the 2009 World Ballet Competition are busily finalizing applications for the "Grand Prix" of the world's most talented technical and artistic ballet dancers, and choreographers pursuing professional dance careers. "The WBC selection panel is reviewing last minute individual applicants and are finalizing the the pas de deux and ensemble entries," said Vasile Petrutiu, director and founder of the WBC.
Hundreds of dancers from all over the world have applied to compete in the 2009 WBC, which includes several divisions: Solo (Preparatory to Professional age categories), Pas de Deux, Ensemble, and Choreography. Competitors compete for a total of up to $100,000 cash prizes and scholarships including the $10,000 Grand Prix Award which is open to most categories. Professional dancers can compete for the $5,000 gold, $3,000 silver, or $2,000 bronze medal awards.
More than 100 competitors from across the globe will travel to Orlando, "The City Beautiful" for this year's competition. Among them they represent nations including Armenia, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Cuba, Japan, New Zealand, Panama, Romania, Russia, Singapore, UK, US and Venezuela. The ballet competition will be held at the Bob Carr Performing Arts Center in Orlando, Florida on June 22 - 27, 2009. For the competition schedule, visit www.wbcorlando.com.
The winners of the 2007 and 2008 WBC were awarded more than $75,000 in cash prizes and over $90,000 in scholarships, and are now dancing professionally with the world's prestigious companies in San Francisco, Boston, Washington, Miami, Italy, Spain, Czech Republic, Germany, Russia, Sweden and Ukraine. Younger WBC winners are now dancing with scholarships at the Kirov Academy of Ballet in Washington, DC, Juliard Dance Program, Harid Conservatory in Boca Raton, FL. Miami City Ballet School, and Ballet Academy of Central Florida in Orlando.
The WBC culminates at 4 pm Saturday, June 27, 2009, with a dazzling Winners' Gala Reception, Lecture, and Awards Ceremony, followed at 7:30 pm by WBC's electrifying "Gala of the Stars" performance. The Gala of the Stars is a Must See, vibrant, inspiring celebration of this revered worldwide performing art form, and affords the Orlando community an unprecedented opportunity to see established dancers and choreographers who are destined for stardom all over the world.
Stars with Boston Ballet, Complexions Dance Company, San Francisco Ballet, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, Washington Ballet and Corella Ballet of Spain will be featured among the winners of this year's competition. Choreographies featured are of diverse styles ranging from the most traditional to the most provocative, contemporary choreographers such as George Balanchine, Nacho Duate, Dwight Rhoden, Viktor Plotnikov, Edgar Anido, and most excitingly the Choreography Award winners of the 2007, 2008 and 2009 World Ballet Competitions.
This year's competition will be broadcast live to all participating countries with combined global internet and TV audiences of millions. The World Ballet Competition is now established as an important fixture on the global ballet scene, and has motivated hundreds of dancers and their families from around the world to take time out to enjoy the Florida sunshine and world-famous theme parks.
