SYTYCD Play By Play: Part Three

Kourtni and Matt danced a sexy mambo on Wednesday night.

Kourtni and Matt danced a sexy mambo on Wednesday night.

This week's results show was really surprising--and not in a good way. Some fabulously technically gifted dancers were let go by the judges, and I felt their reasoning seemed a little flimsy. Take a look at the Play By Play to see how the night panned out...after the jump!

9:00: I'm sad that there really hasn't been a showstopping Broadway number yet on this show. They always make it kind of carnival-esque, weird and twitchy. Give me some 42nd Street!

9:02: How cute is Cat? They actually put her in a flattering dress tonight, but the necklace is...bleck. God Lord, Fox. The woman is gorgeous! Why must you make her look like a clown?

9:05: Random time filler with Tyce's badmouthing. He's hilarious, though. "The land of bad jazz." Honey, I feel you on that. Just sit through a few competitions.

9:06: Twitch and Kherington are getting their critiques. I'm sure they're saved.

9:07: Katee and Joshua...there's no way they're being let go. They're awesome, awesome, awesome.

9:08: I knew it! Both are safe. P.S. How cute are Twitch's glasses? Loving it!

9:12: Kourtni and Matt. Their hip hop last night was weak. The mambo was pretty decent, but not good enough to erase the bad taste from the first number. They are once again voted in the bottom three.

9:15: Courtney and Gev's hip hop was also disappointing. This girl's mouth stays open too much while she performs. I think she's adorable, but needs to find a way to emote without "oooohing" and "ahhhing" her way through a dance. The Broadway number was fun, but I wasn't thrilled with it either. Something about it felt a little fake. Still, I wanted to smile, and I was almost tapping my toes, so that counts for something.

9:16: Mark and Chelsie weren't the best of the night, but their energy was top-notch. They should hopefully be safe.

9:17: Courtney and Gev are in the bottom three, as expected. America, you guys usually get it right!

9:22: Comfort and Thayne's first pairing was fairly successful. The West Side Story routine was decent, and the waltz was really lovely, if a little boring (not their fault).

9:24: Jessica and Will were exciting to watch. But, one of the judges nailed it last night...I believe it was Napoleon...when he said she goes in and out with her performance quality and doesn't commit one hundred percent.

9:25: Comfort and Thayne are in the bottom three. I think that seems about right as well. Congrats to Will and Jessica. Jessica: Next week, you better take it to the next level!

9:26: They brought back the awesome popper from L.A. auditions. The man has a slinky for a spine, not to mention incredibly bendy arms. I absolutely loved the ending, with the shades and the ass pat. He was fantastic.

9:35: Kourtni's solo was a wonderful mix of dance and technical elements. Her turns were right on, her control was impeccable, and she also let herself go when she needed to. She's a marquee dancer. Needs to be kept.

9:36: Matt had really great lines, high jumps. Overall, he has beautiful technique and is a strong, strong dancer. He should be safe.

9:38 Courtney...yikes. This was not a strong solo. She started with a straddle leap that looked heavy, traveled sideways on her turns in second, and did not point her toes hard enough. Plus, she kept opening that damn mouth. If Comfort doesn't choke, Courtney might be out.

9:39: Gev rocked all kinds of hip hop. He had amazing jumps, his b-boy skills were fresh, and I even saw some locking in there. Not to mention that crazy final flip! It looked like a half aerial, half front walkover. This kid is insane. I wish he would get more routines that showcase his skill.

9:43: Comfort...dang! Loved the krumping and the walking on the toes. This girl hits hard. I hope they keep her.

9:44: Thayne has great technique, but I'm not feeling this solo. There were some awkward moments on the stairs and he looked a little too straight up and down for me. But the judges seem to love him, so I fear Gev might be the one to go.

9:46: OneRepublic sings "All I Need." I like their style. Good to see someone singing live, but they're a wee bit boring. I'm also kind of sick of the heady tenors out there. Leave that up to Chris Martin of Coldplay and Thom Yorke of Radiohead. And I suppose Justin Timberlake can do it too.

9:53: Nigel tells Courtney she can stay. Well, she is fun to watch, but her solo was terrible. So, I'm guessing now it's Comfort's turn to go. Wait...what???

9:54: Kourtni is leaving?! This is ridiculous! I feel they're letting her go because she's too similar to Kherington, and that's not fair. They didn't even give her a reason why they chose her. Boooo judges!

9:56: Yay! Gev stays. I swear, if they keep Thayne, I'm gonna have to kill...

9:57: Okay, heads are going to roll. Matt is out. What the heck!!

I'm really not thrilled with tonight's results. I feel like the judges voted for personality over talent, and at the end of the day, it's what the dancers put on the stage, not how cool or fun they are, that really matters in the professional world.

What did you all think? Were the judges fair? Or did they completely miss the mark? Leave your comments!
