SYTYCD Play By Play: Part Two
Welcome to SYTYCD Play-by-Play: Part Two! This week, I'm checking out the last four couples as they perform their choreographed routines. The competition heats up, and the judges' expectations are set high. Who will kill it? Who will get bumped off the Hot Tamale Train? Find out after the jump.
9:06: Matt and Kourtni pick contemporary, their forte. First time choreographer Sonya has awesome hair, and a cool concept for the dance: Comic book heroes flirting. Let's see the routine...not loving it, but the kids commit, which is great fun to watch. Holy cow, Matt has awesome feet!
9:13: Why did whats-his-face judge rag on Matt's ninja mask? It had nothing to do with the dance. That was awkward. But yes, I agree with him that the costume department messed up. I didn't really see comic book characters. More like ragamuffin homeless people.
9:18: Thayne is adorable. I'm a sucker for guys with accents. And Chelsea looked lovely out there. But, they're dancing the Quickstep to Phil Collins! This is a strange musical choice for this style of dance. They did a fine job with what they were given, which wasn't much.
9:25: Mary is going on a tangent about her "hot tamale train" and apparently Chelsea is now off it. I thought she was the more exciting of the two on the floor, but I also don't know much about Quickstep technique, so I'll have to defer to her expert opinion.
9:33: Ewww! Mark's pinkies are crooked!
9:34: I love Tabitha and Napoleon. They are the sweetest people, and they really take hip hop to another level. It's not just about looking cool, but about telling a story. You don't need to do lyrical or contemporary to have feeling. I'm already excited to see this...
9:37: Chelsie and Mark were amazing! The emotion was raw, the choreography was flipping fantastic, and I was absolutely floored by their performance. The story was about a workaholic man who keeps leaving his wife/girlfriend for the office, and her struggle to hold on to him. It was poignant, truthful, and I really believed Mark and Chelsie's pain. They could have been a bit more grounded, and sometimes their timing was off, but I'll take that over a perfectly executed but flat routine.
9:46: Josh and Katee draw the samba. Hysterical moment when Josh checks out Katee with her leg up in the air.
9:48: What great chemistry. Josh and Katee look like they're really having fun up there, despite the fact this dance is uncomfortable for the both of them. They don't show it!
9:51: Josh is hilarious! Nigel: "What did you think when you drew the samba?" Josh: "Time to do the solo!" Well, if America agrees with the judges, then there will be no solos for these two tomorrow night.
Who do you think will be in the bottom three? Who do you think will go home? Tune in tomorrow to find out!
