Dance IS for everyone.
The time is finally almost here. Starting Friday, it's National Dance Week in America. It's time for us to celebrate what we love the most...dance.
Many different cities and areas are celebrating NDW in their own way.
In DC, we are actually having a program called "Dance Is the Answer". Multiple studios, dance companies and dance artists are joining together to provide free dance classes and workshops throughout the DC metro area. DanceMetroDC is sponsoring this event. It will provide open and easy access to dance for everyone in the area.
The idea and purpose of this program is simple but truly stated:
"Dance Is The Answer to achieving and maintaining good health.
Dance Is The Answer to reaching weight management goals.
Dance Is The Answer to finding an inspiring creative outlet.
Dance Is The Answer to enriching your social life.
Dance Is The Answer to deepening your connection to the community."

We each find a different reason for why we love to dance. But in general, all of these reasons are vital and important to the purpose of dance. The overall message is simple: dance is for everyone and anyone.
For the past few years, this message has become very real in my life. I have had the priviledge of teaching dance in various outreach settings. From inner city schools in DC, to nursing homes and rehab centers for the elderly, to special needs class for children with autism, I have seen the difference that dance can make and has made.
Dance really is for everyone.
No, my students may never be world-class dancers but they have taken away valuable life lessons.
Lessons they may never get anywhere else...but in a dance class.
So celebrate National Dance Week. Maybe it'll be by taking some dance classes, or a special workshop. Maybe it'll be by teaching a dance class. Or maybe it'll be introduciing dance to someone who has never danced before.
But whatever you do, make sure to take some time this week to celebrate the amazing art that we love...dance.
