Foothill College 50th Anniversary: Celebrate with Dance
The Foothill College Repertory Dance Company, directed by award-winning Director Bubba Gong, will present FIVE-O, a dance event celebrating Foothill College's 50th anniversary, on Friday and Saturday, May 30 and 31, at 7:30 p.m. at the college's Smithwick Theatre, 12345 El Monte Rd., Los Altos Hills, CA.
The 50-member company will present a diverse program, ranging from ballet to Broadway and hip-hop to world dance cultures.
Gong, founder and artistic director and a Bay Area Theatre Critics' Circle and Dean Goodman honoree, will premiere four works: Dancing Mozart is dedicated to Foothill's new president, Judy Miner. Marriage of Figaro provides the backdrop for a modern and whimsical celebration. Mississippi Memories is a tribute to the victims of hurricane Katrina. Set to the music of legendary Ray Charles and featuring the technique of Lester Horton, the medley evokes images of Gong's early years growing up in the Mississippi Delta. Confessions of a Dancer: The Apassionata, is a contemporary jazz and modern fusion of dance styles and music. It explores aspects of conflict and the choices one makes on the journey to finding love. Fosse's World explores the signature vocabulary of showman Bob Fosse, with favorite excerpts from the musical Sweet Charity, including Big Spender, Rich Man's Frug and I'm a Brass Band.
Technical direction is by John Celona with assistant direction by Tami Burton and Terin Kandarian. Residency choreography by Erin McKevitt, Michael Saenz and Jelainie Galang.
Guests artists include Dance Connection of Palo Alto, Mac'nCheeze and Gold Star.
