The search is on for Broadway's Billy Elliot

As Billy Elliot - The Musical builds up to a Broadway opening this fall, the show continues its nationwide search for a new star.  With auditions in numerous U.S. cities, Billy Elliot is scouring the country in search of an amazing young triple threat to play the title roll of Billy.  The show is also casting the role of Michael, Billy's best friend, and looking for a group of tutu touting ballet girls.

With hopes of building a talented cast of youngsters Billy Elliot will hold open auditions in Detroit this weekend.  Similar auditions have been held in New York, Los Angeles, Boston, Dallas, Chicago, and a bevy of other cities throughout the country.  The Be Billy website contains all the details you need to know about upcoming audition dates, what to prepare for the audition, and other frequently asked questions.

This video documentary talks about the process of becoming Billy Elliot:

Billy Elliot will open at the Imperial Theater on Oct. 16, 2008.  The show is based on the Oscar-nominated film about a working-class British boy who dares to dance against-the-odds in pursuit of an unlikely dream of attending the Royal Ballet School in London.  Both the film and the musical are directed by Stephen Daldry and feature the choreography of Peter Darling.  Music Legend Elton John composed the score for the show while Lee Hall wrote book and lyrics.  Billy Elliot won Best New Musical and Best Theatre Choreographer trophies at the 2006 Olivier Awards.  The three young performers who rotated in the title role of Billy shared the Award for Best Actor in a Musical.
