Paula Abdul Dances Like There's No Tomorrow... With Good Reason
Back in her heyday, Paula Abdul was the "it" girl, especially when it came to dance. LA Laker Girl turned choreographer pop star diva, she rocked music videos and live performances like nobody's business. From tap dancing in "Straight Up" to honoring the legacy of Bob Fosse's "All that Jazz" in her raunchy rendition of "Cold Hearted Snake," she pushed boundaries without ever relinquishing her studio technique.
So now, having given credit where credit is due, I must deliver the sad news (as if we didn't already know!) that Paula Abdul is not only past her prime, she's officially a has-been.
The video for "Dance Like There's No Tomorrow," her first single since 1996, aired a few weeks ago during American Idol:
As much as I really wanted to like this video, I just can't let nostalgia get the best of me. The whole thing looks like it came straight out of a 1980s playbook, especially with the red satin blowing in the background as she gazes intently into the camera. It's just not believable anymore. And neither is the choreography, which is just recycled material from the past 3 decades. She's fit and can definitely still move, but I've seen high school students with more innovation.
And don't get me started on Randy Jackson and the "band" rocking out in the background. It's as painful as watching a 1980s tribute band play at an AARP convention.
From her high-waisted tuxedo pants to the lame special effects and the wind machine, everything about this video is outdated, especially Paula, who tries painstakingly to disguise her age with skimpy outfits.
As much as I love Ms. Abdul and give her props for trying, this so-called comeback just isn't going to happen. It's no wonder she's dancing like there's no tomorrow...
