Concert Dance Company and the CSN Dance Ensemble join forces in a multi-media examination of the life, times, and imagery associated with Joan of Arc. Choreographer Kelly Roth's 70 minute "Archetype: Images of St. Joan" probes the French cultural icon's inner voices, outer struggles, and the various layers of meaning attached to "I first became interested in Joan of Arc when as a child I discovered her distant presence in my family tree," says Roth. "As I continued to study her life it became apparent that others also felt a kinship to her. Contemporary covens of witches, feminists, Nazis, lesbians, the French conservative party, as well as several major religious sects in addition to the Catholic Church all claim her as their own," he added. Roth's first revival of his 1999 choreographic exploration juxtaposes historical scenes with the mysticism and spirituality inherent in the familiar account of the young peasant girl whose "voices" inspired the liberation of her country, but ultimately led to her burning as a heretic. Dance critic Hal de Becker praised the production for "Roth's historically perceptive choreography that lay somewhere between dance and ritualistic mime." CallBack
