Celebrating Judith Jamison with Series of Special Programs & Performances

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, recognized by U.S. Congress as a vital American "Cultural Ambassador to the World," returns to the stage of New York City Center from December 2, 2009 through January 3, 2010 for a five-week season celebrating 2009 TIME 100 Honoree Judith Jamison as she embarks on her 20th year as Artistic Director.

In addition to a one-night-only opening benefit performance, hosted by Pauletta and Denzel Washington, the series of special programs and performances include:

• Ronald K. Brown's world premiere tribute to Jamison called Dancing Spirit,
  
  
  
• live onstage appearances by Anna Deavere Smith in Judith Jamison's Emmy Award-winning Hymn,
  
  
  
• a Best of 20 Years program featuring works commissioned or revived during Jamison's tenure.
  
  
  
• Judith Jamison's new ballet with original jazz compositions by musical iconoclast Eric Lewis
  
  
  
• Company member Matthew Rushing's homage to the Harlem Renaissance in Uptown,
  
  
  
• the Company premiere of Robert Battle's gripping solo In/Side.

Throughout the December season, which has become a joyous holiday tradition, Ailey's extraordinary artists will move audiences with over 40 ballets by 20 choreographers, including favorites such as Alvin Ailey's signature masterpiece Revelations, a must-see for all people.
