« Return to Why Ballet-Inspired Fashion Sticks Around

Elegance and grace never go out of style

Your observation about ballerina-inspired fashion is so true, and there is indeed no end in sight.   A few years ago when leg warmers came back in style, although somewhat briefly, I remember thinking, "Oh look, now everyone is wearing them. I have been wearing them every day for years!"  Even more recently the ballet flats have been a hot commodity, some looking so similar to actual ballet slippers that you would think the manufacturer was Capezio.   I thought you brought some interesting insight into why these styles may have such an influence on those who wear them.  Like every stylist will say, clothing is a personal statement and can also change how you feel and project yourself to others.

For many, the allure of being a ballerina has a mystical glamour that is an appealing inspiration to both every day style, as well as even the most high fashion runways.  I was looking through the September "Vogue" and there was an entire layout devoted to ballet-inspired dresses.   In lieu of Broadway's new "Billy Elliot", the twelve page spread featured dramatic dresses and embellished skirts of tulle, amidst the three "Billys".  The soft lens and smoke-filled backgrounds made the photos look like they were taken in the same forest as the willies of "Giselle".

With emphasis on a new piece of ballet attire hitting the fashion lists every season, it's nice to know that everyone can experience a little bit of dance in their every day lives.
